Worth the price for the Hindemith alone, August 30, 2010
This review is from: Symphony 3 / Mathis Der Maler (Audio CD)
The Toch-Hindemith combination existed for some time in an open-reel stereo format before it became one of the first classical LPs in stereo. I was at the world premiere of the Toch and found it beyond my twelve-year-old comprehension. However, I studied it over the next couple of years while I was trying to acclimatize myself to "modern" music. It will probably never be my favourite symphony, nor Toch my favourite composer. Still, it's a fun piece and worth checking out.
What sets this Mathis der Maler apart from any other rendition I've heard is the muscular playing of the Pittsburgh Symphony and the very idiomatic interpretation conductor Steinberg brings to it.
