Four Elements, One Great Contemporary Classical Work,
By
This review is from: Symphony No. 1: The Four Elements (Audio CD)
In the history of music, there have been many great works created that deal with nature, whether it has been Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, Debussy's "La Mer", or minimalist works like Philip Glass' "The Canyon." Add to that collection this impressive First Symphony by the German-born jazz, classical, and film score composer Chris Walden, known as "The Four Elements." The four elements depicted so vividly in the symphony are, as follows: Earth (Gaia); Water (Hudor); Air (Aer); and Fire (Therma). Very well laid out, the symphony is a thoroughly modern work, but a thoroughly accessible one as well, with the composer himself conducting the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra, whose musicians have worked with Mr. Walden himself on his numerous film scores, and have also done work on scores by John Williams (INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL) and Craig Armstrong (WORLD TRADE CENTER).
Justly nominated for Grammys in the Best Contemporary Classical and Best Orchestral Performance categories, Chris Walden's Symphony No. 1 is a work well worth having in one's collection.
