Michael Tilson Thomas (often called simply MTT) has done great things for the San Francisco Symphony, and this Free Song of the Day on Feb 10, 2011 shows why.

The opening of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, one of the most famous classical pieces in the world, is so familiar it can be hard to really listen to it anymore. When they go to a concert of Beethoven's 5th, most people are really paying to hear to something they already know almost inside out. They are certainly not going to have their horizons challenged.

This recording made me sit up and take notice a couple of times, however. MTT brings out the wind section in a very satisfying way. The recording quality is very high with good sound even from the MP3. I enjoyed it very much.

What more can be said about this? It is Beethoven! Anything the man has composed has been a hit! If you are a music major like my wife, this will be a well accepted gift.
