It took awhile to fully appreciate this album, but deep down it is probably his most well composed music. The sheer amount of layers and complexity inside the music is wonderful. The symphonies are filled both with dread and horror as well as love and ecstacy. His music is primal much like fear, love, anger, and sex. If you listen to his other works, I think you'll find alot more ambience and less structure. In this album however his music is much more disciplined.

To truly fall in love with these symphonies, I highly recommend also getting his dvd "live at the kitchen". Hearing these works recorded live and watching the different rows of guitars play their parts really makes the music pop. These symphonies took on a whole different life after buying that dvd. Personally I would just get that dvd because I believe it serves the music better, but either way you cannot go wrong with these symphonies. This is Glenn Branca at his most refined and structured, all while never losing his chaotic essence. True it doesn't have strong melodies or catchy hooks, and I admit it took awhile to love his music. But let yourself sink into the music, set aside any distractions, and in time I think everyone can learn to appreciate and understand the passion here. His music is raw, primal, emotional, haunting, chaotic, joyous, spiritual, and sexually charged all at once.

My girlfriend perhaps said it best about Glenn Branca's music; it's like listening to a Jackson Pollack painting. ---buy this album 5 stars---

Should life stop making sense (again), submerge yourself in Branca's hellish sonic power. Of all of Branca's symphonies, 8 and 10 are my favourites because they are among his most accomplished works. Highly recommended!

Very edgy symphonic music written for an army of guitarists and a couple of drummers. Branca's music seems blunt and simple on the surface, but, paradoxically, subtleties emerge at high volume. His stated themes for these works are life and death, and he does evoke the joys and anxieties of existence through the ambling drums and slowly-building harmonies of the guitars. More and more the listener comes to identify with the spirits of these works until, in the final crescendo, all is lost in the despair of certain death. What more can you ask for?

This is my first Glenn Branca record, (It was a d/l not a store purchase). And while the idea of having a electric guitar symphony is nice, there's just not much 'there' there.

This is basically just 60 minutes of feedback along with the most pedantic horrible drumming I've ever head. The drummer does just a cymbal ride for what seems like 10 minutes during one song, and the rest of the time it's just the same thumps with no variety or flair.

The guitar work is okay, if you enjoy feedback and skronk (I usuually do), but there just needs to be a little more variety for me to recommend this.
