4.0 out of 5 stars Well-crafted works October 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
August Klughardt (1847-1902) wrote concertos, four operas and five symphonies. Both of the works on this disc are worth hearing, especially the violin concerto, and both have good melodic material. Schumann and Mendelssohn come to mind, and even Bruckner occasionally. The symphony has some passages bordering on note-spinning, but there are interesting things as well, and the performances are very good, again especially in the violin concerto. For fanciers of mainstream romantic music looking for something new, these are worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Sound. August 7, 2012
By John
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was a first experience of this composer, and what a delightful discovery.
The Symphony flows with wonderful themes, but the Violin Concerto is stunning.
Both are superbly played and the recorded sound wonderful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Winning Concerto and an Okay Symphony February 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For me, the real find on this disc is August Klughardt's Violin Concerto, a four movement work that starts out sounding just a bit stiff and clunky, but which rapidly transforms into an engaging, complex and captivating musical journey. The solo parts, including a long extended unaccompanied section in movement two, are truly interesting to my untrained ear, and the playing strikes me as excellent. The symphony, meanwhile, is no slouch itself, though I think it fails to go beyond being an earnest if sometimes awkward composition that doesn't tell as much of a complete emotional story as the concerto relates. Nonetheless, I've enjoyed repeated hearings. The concerto, however, is the stronger of the two, and by itself deserves five stars on its own. Both pieces are solid late Romantic pieces, not quite at the level of Brahms, but the concerto makes good shot at it. Recommended.
