5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING! when buying used copies!, November 3, 2008
This review is from: The Synaxarion: The Lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church September, October (Volume 1) (Hardcover)
This Synaxarion of the Eastern Orthodox Church, written by the heiromonk Makarios, is the best version available. The Synaxarion is published in a series by month of the year. Each volume gives brief biographies of many of the saints commemorated each day of the month, an explanation of any major feasts celebrated during the month, plus spiritual readings.

I write this review because I am appalled at the prices that used-book sellers are trying to GOUGE buyers with, for example the $169-something price per volume. And even the $60+ prices. If you google Synaxarion + Makarios, you will find many reputable dealers from which you can receive a NEW volume for $50 or less.

5.0 out of 5 stars "...The Synaxarion...appeared naturally, as a birth in the desert..."--Preface, October 16, 2009
This review is from: The Synaxarion: The Lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church September, October (Volume 1) (Hardcover)
Six volumes in all (2 months included in each volume, e.g. volume 1 includes September and October; arranged in sequence by calendar date), compiled and edited by Priest-Monk Makarios of Simonos Petras Monastery on the Holy Mountain, have been translated from the French.

The initial translator was Christopher Hookway, who reposed on Nativity 2000 , was responsible for September - February. [The translator's identity should not be confused with the Charles Pierce specialist, by the same name, on the Philosophy faculty of Sheffield (UK).]

Mothers Maria (Rule) Joanna (Burton) completed the March - August volumes. These English translations began release in 1998, and are published by the Press of the Holy Convent of the Annunciation of Our Lady Ormylia (Chalkidike) in Greece.

It is worthy to note overall qualities shared among the three translators. Combining detailed historical research and idiomatic text, which spare pietistic flourishes that might otherwise heap honey on existing sweetness to be tasted in the lives of all Orthodox saints, distinguish these translations.

Translators--Mothers Maria and Joanna--are members of the main Cenobium, which counts more than 100 nuns in residence. The Convent of the Annunciation is a Patriarchal Dependency of the Holy Monastery of Simonos Petra, Mt. Athos. Most nuns are university-educated. In addition to the Press, they practice healing arts of the Church through various service arms associated with the Center for Social Advancement, Medical Prevention and Research, Panagia Philanthropini.

Father Makarios gathered his sources beginning with the Synaxarion of Constantinople [mid-X-century]. A seasoned distribution of saints from all first-millennium Patriarchates and Orthodox regions awaits the discriminating palate. Subsequent Synaxarion source-revisions by St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain [cf. Greek Philokalia] favor Byzantium saints starting with the Great Schism, early 11th-century, and inclusive of St. Gregory Palamas and contemporaries.

From the 15th-century onward, favor of Greek saints is evident. Nevertheless, many New Martyrs as well as other saints from Slavic and Romanian Churches are prominent. Readers seeking hagiographies of pre-Carolingian saints of the Western Church, such as Sts. Cuthbert, Aelred, Patrick, and Columba, will applaud the additional efforts of translators, unnamed editors, and principal compiler, Father Makarios, to deliver material just as well-crafted as Eastern saints better known in global Orthodoxy.

I have read aloud daily entries for more than a couple of years to test the audible "feel" associated with these translations. In the main, words cluster easily so as not to require interjected breaths. However, I have not practiced reading aloud in common. Other reviewers have not encouraged common Lectio Divina from these translations. Even now that I am on my third annual pass, I never grow weary of the rhythm, nor stumble on awkward phrases. Whether read aloud or silently, my experience of praying with these translations is sustained attraction to Christ in His great cloud of witnesses.

In conclusion, I want to acknowledge with praise additional features of these volumes, such as full-color templates, flexible cloth binding and size that is ideal for shared reading, paper quality, bibliographies, indices, editorial notes, and print size. Indeed, these publications are a labor of love by thousands of Orthodox faithful across more than two millennia who have followed Christ in theosis. For English readers, these volumes will become cherished companions of their Baptismal vocation to manifest Christ, aspiring to reveal their own calling as saints in every land.
