This isn't Warren Vache the trumpeter -- it's his dad, the bassist, June 23, 2011
This review is from: Syncopatin Seven (Audio CD)
Surprisingly, Amazon seems unable to distinguish between Warren Vache Sr., the bassist, and his son, Warren Vache the trumpeter/cornetist (who doesn't use Jr. after his name and who has more recordings). Those of us familiar with the son's recordings know that he doesn't play traditional jazz (the term Dixieland is a slur for the mongrelized, commercialized version of traditional jazz). From what I can tell, this 1994 album on the Circle label appears to be the first recording by Sr. and his group, the Syncopatin' Seven. Though they're known more for traditional jazz, this is in places a fairly mainstream-sounding album. The nicely done Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams and Music Hath Charms, for example, sound like standard New York cabaret fare, and very good fare at that. It Was So Beautiful is a nice ballroom-blues number, and for trad-lazz lovers, there are peppier tunes like From Monday On and Wa-Da-Da. All in all, it's a good mix and there's nothing really wrong with it -- it works just fine; but if I give Louis Armstrong five stars for material like this, I have to back down and give this a solid four. This doesn't quite reach Armstrong's standard, but it's pleasant listening anyway and worth your investment.
