My little brother had lent this game out, and I never saw it agian. This IS the best game in its genre (which I guess falls into action). You get to take over a cities population, steal some flying cars, and rob a bank when you get low on cash to fund your new developing weapons. Definatly worth checking out even with it being as old as it is.

This game is the primordal stage of the GTA series. Ecept instead of a criminal you play as either a European corporation or a new religions enforcer. You hit the street and persuade people to join your cause or kill your rivals depending on which side you choose. The combat is even well done and reminds me of RTS battles like command and conquer with little guys unloading on each other with automatics until enough of them die and those standing are the victors.I was unaware of any open ended games on the PS1 and I'm so glad I found this one.

Syndicate Wars is an excellent strategy/action game for the original Playstation system. In the game, you choose to take control of either Eurocorp, a global corporation which controls its citizens with mind-control technology, or the Order of the New Epoch, a religion seeking to overthrow Eurocorp and take control of people for themselves. You control a small squad of agents in each level, and can upgrade them and purchase equipment between missions. You complete various objectives, such as assassinating a certain number of enemies or converting a certain number of citizens to your cause. The graphics are well done, though they are not the high point of the game. Most of the game is isometric, so the characters appear rather small and a little grainy, but everything has a cyber-apocalyptic style which draws you in to the story. The music is also fitting for such a setting, though many of the tracks don't stand out from each other. But it's the gameplay that really brings it together. The game is incredibly fun. It is also quite challenging, so don't expect any easy wins, not even early in the missions. The story and atmosphere are dark and violent, however, so it's something to be aware of before you purchase the game. All in all, it is a great, unique addition to any Playstation library.
