Book Description

Corruption is a threat to democracy and economic development in many societies. It arises in the ways people pursue, use and exchange wealth and power, and in the strength or weakness of the state, political and social institutions that sustain and restrain those processes. Differences in these factors, Michael Johnston argues, give rise to four major syndromes of corruption: Influence Markets, Elite Cartels, Oligarchs and Clans, and Official Moguls. Johnston uses statistical measures to identify societies in each group, and case studies to show that the expected syndromes do arise.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This text is a brilliant step forward in the comparative study and response to political corruption. [...] The author breaks new ground by combining cross-sectional methodologies with descriptive case studies... Highly recommended."

"A broadened and nuanced view of corruption, showing it as even more complex than we imagine."

Book Description

This book argues that the corruption problems of the world's societies tend to fall into four contrasting syndromes. Beginning with the ways people pursue, use and exchange wealth and power, Michael Johnston examines four kinds of corruption problems in twelve countries: Influence Markets, Elite Cartels, Oligarchs and Clans, and Official Moguls. Different syndromes of corruption require differing reforms; the most important, in the long run, being 'deep democratisation', enabling people to defend their interests by political means.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful book., May 6, 2008

This review is from: Syndromes of Corruption: Wealth, Power, and Democracy (Paperback)
Johnston uses comparative case studies to present his case that corruption takes on different forms in different societies, and understanding these forms is essential to combating it. Johnston makes and defends his case well, and is a useful contribution to the field.

This book is a step above the layman level, but is still quite accessible.
