As a remote Audio system, it is working great.

Plus, even though I back up the server, having local copies on everyone's computer gives me added comfort that I will never lose data.

The DSM software that runs on the box is really great.

Had a couple of issues with this device. First, the software has this auto "convert-thumbnail" function, that just eats away system resources if you have any picture on your shared photo folder. For example, when I upload just a single medium resolution photo, the "convert-thumbnail' process would start in the background and keep the CPU at 100% ALL THE TIME! It would only stop if I remove all photo(s) from the 'photo' folder. After much research online, I was able to find a way to kill the convert thumb process through a telnet command. But this is a temporary fix since it starts again at every reboot.

Another problem I had was every time I uploaded a large file of over 2GB (yes I enabled java), I would get a BSOD of "DPC_watchdog_violation" and my computer would crash. I called tech support and they said to call Microsoft because they don't handle BSOD errors. After an hour with Microsoft tech support, we found out that my AVG antivirus was creating a conflict with the Synology software. Upon uninstalling AVG, the problem no longer existed. I use Windows Defender now instead. I'm running Windows 8 Pro, and using DSM 4.2 version.

Overall, a good device with some minor issues.

Edit 3/14/12: The wifi speed is poor compared to my Medialink a/b/g/n router. The DS213air is connected via CAT6 cable to my router and I get speeds about 5Mbps lower when I connect to the internet through the DS213Air's wifi hotspot. It's a shame that Synology did not invest in a better wireless chip.

Upload speed (via wired ethernet connection)- Large files, such as videos, upload at normal/max speeds. But folders containing multiple small files, such as pictures, upload at about 1/5 the normal speed.

I've spent some time researching where I wanted to spend my money for a home NAS. The following were my needs:
1) Ease of use - don't want to spend a bunch of time fiddling with settings
2) hold my photos, videos/movies, and music so that I can access them from various devices in my home
3) ideally, access above media from mobile devices (ideally, with a nice app)

Mission accomplished on all fronts!!
This unit was VERY simple to setup! Within 15 minutes, I had the two 3tb WD Red drives installed and configured in a Synology Hybrid Array and was uploading my first media files. Installed a couple apps (updated to the 4.2 beta and everything still worked well, even in a beta mode) and was able to access my media from my android phone, tablet, iPad, PS3 and with the Plex app installed from my Roku. The setup for mobile access was also very easy as it does a nice job configuring your router. All in all, I love the unit, however, after seeing what I can do with it, I have decided that I need a bigger unit as with the array and the two drive scenario you only get half of the total space. (worth it as you always have a backup if one drive crashes.) The easy part is that I know I'll be purchasing another Synology device!!

This thing is fantastic. Really easy to set up and once you install the Crashplan headless client you have the ultimate redundant network storage solution.

I couldn't be happier with this product. It's been about 3 months since I purchased, so I don't recall the set up that well. Seems like I had a minor hiccup, but I don't think it was too difficult to set up. I'm not a computer genius, and I was able to set it up without calling customer service. I replaced an Iomega Home Media cloud edition which was slowing down after 1 1/2 years use. The Iomega had a cloud, which I liked, but it was fairly slow when working from home and, eventually, the cloud became so slow and unreliable that it was virtually useless. The Synology Air, on the other hand, is extremely fast and efficient in its operation. But the best part is the cloud station software. It improves upon the cloud concept by syncing local copies to each computer using it. As a result, my assistant and I can both work from home just as easily as working at the office. Anytime a change is made to any document, it immediately is synced to the server and then back to all computers which are on and which are linked to the server via the cloud software. Because you are always working on local copies of documents, there is never a speed issue. Plus, even though I back up the server, having local copies on everyone's computer gives me added comfort that I will never lose data. I have not had a single issue with this product since I got it going.

Though the product was more expensive than the Iomega home media drive, and you have to install your own hard drive, which is some additional cost, I didn't mind for several reasons: (1) it works SO well that it is worth the additional cost; (2) I like the idea that the hard drive is removable.

This has been one of the best products I've ever purchased. The DSM software that runs on the box is really great. I put 2 1.5GB drives in mine and it has been running flawlessly ever since I purchased it. The updates are welcome surprises and the app store is great. Amazon glacier support is also one feature I use all the time to backup my media on the cheap.
