Book Description

1575864002 978-1575864006 April 1, 2003 Second Edition, 2nd Edition
This second edition of Syntactic Theory: A Formal Introduction expands and improves upon a truly unique introductory syntax textbook. Like the first edition, its focus is on the development of precisely formulated grammars whose empirical predictions can be directly tested. There is also considerable emphasis on the prediction and evaluation of grammatical hypotheses, as well as on integrating syntactic hypotheses with matters of semantic analysis.

The book covers the core areas of English syntax from the last quarter century, including complementation, control, "raising constructions," passives, the auxiliary system, and the analysis of long distance dependency constructions. Syntactic Theory's step-by-step introduction to a consistent grammar in these core areas is complemented by extensive problem sets drawing from a variety of languages.

The book's theoretical perspective is presented in the context of current models of language processing, and the practical value of the constraint-based, lexicalist grammatical architecture proposed has already been demonstrated in computer language processing applications. This thoroughly reworked second edition includes revised and extended problem sets, updated analyses, additional examples, and more detailed exposition throughout.

Praise for the first edition:
"Syntactic Theory sets a new standard for introductory syntax volumes that all future books should be measured against."—Gert Webelhuth, Journal of Linguistics

4.0 out of 5 stars A necessary part of any study of syntax, June 2, 2004
By A Customer
Syntactic Theory is a comprehensive introduction to syntax, and not only presents a comprehensive theory but teaches the reader to analyze English sentences and formulate and test original hypotheses. Sag et al develop a very powerful analytic framework, and take you step by step through its development. This incremental approach is my only criticism; while its important to lay a solid foundation, the authors present several simplified-yet-flawed theories in the beginning, and the transition to "real" theory sneaks up on the reader. I believe that the simplified theories are important to introduce syntax to the reader at a manageable pace, be ware that the first few chapters inform the later chapters, but many of the grammatical hypothesis will be disproved later in the book. It can cause a bit of confusion, but the careful reader should have no problem. Overall, a great learning tool and very useful excercises.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to functional syntactic theory, January 12, 2008
This review is from: Syntactic Theory: A Formal Introduction, 2nd Edition (Center for the Study of Language and Information - Lecture Notes) (Paperback)
I used this as a textbook in one of my graduate courses in syntax, and overall, I liked the way the book was structured, in which the authors presented simple theories in the beginning, and improving and revising them as the book goes along. Even though this means that the beginning theories are flawed, I believe this is the only way to introduce a complex theoretical notion such as syntax.

5.0 out of 5 stars good, October 31, 2008
This review is from: Syntactic Theory: A Formal Introduction, 2nd Edition (Center for the Study of Language and Information - Lecture Notes) (Paperback)
Descriptive and doesn't assume any prior knowledge of Chomskian theories. Has some difficulty explaining certain concepts, but most of it it very clear.
