5.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the first September 28, 2007

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I wasn't expecting much from this game considering how badly the series went down hill like a runaway train after the first syphon filter. The first syphon filter had cutting edge graphics for a playstation game, a great story and excellent mix of action and stealth game play.

The series was pretty much butchered in the second, third and fourth games. But Dark mirror has really impressed me.

The graphics are very good for a PS2 game, really good models and clean crisp textures. The story is interesting and sets the table for some intense action.

Gabe can take cover then peek around corners or over crates to fire at enemy soldiers. There's a huge variety of weapons and gadets for Gabe to use, from sniper rifles, machine guns to shotguns.Gabe can climb up on crates, climb up ladders and glide down zip lines which is really kewl.

Each level has plenty of enemys to kill, numerous switches to activate or objective's such as placing C4 on the tail of a C-130 to keep the action going.

Dark mirror has 30 missions including some bonus missions, the career rating in stealth combat specialist, combat knife specialist, elite weapons expert, survival specialist, tactical combat specialist and combat sharp shooter adds plenty of replayability, letting players unlock new weapons and skills by playing through the missions again while trying to sharpen these skills...

This game is alot of fun and I recommend it to anyone that enjoyed the first Syphon filter.

Dark Mirror is one of many in the long line of Syphon Filter games. It carries on the tradition of excellent third-person shooting action serving as the foundation for a twisting plot of intrigue and conspiracy. A sensitive incident at a refinery in Alaska leads to an investigation by agent Gabe Logan and his covert team. What they uncover is not what they expected and when things just don't add up they dig deeper, slowly adding pieces to the puzzle of a deadly conspiracy. In order to keep up with the story, it's important to find hidden evidence on each level and read the files in your inventory. They provide essential details to story progress. Without them (they aren't necessary), it's sometimes difficult to figure out the whos and whys of what is going on. The twists and turns come fast, and apart from the occasional unaccounted for gap due to missing intel, the story is solid. Deception abounds and Dark Mirror feels more like a mystery than past tactical espionage-oriented Syphon Filter games.

This time around, the missions are presented in smaller pieces with simpler designs. You can sit down and play through one part of a mission in under 10 minutes. There are checkpoints within these bite-sized areas at critical locations so you never have to backtrack far if you die or do something that results in mission failure. The levels themselves are fairly straightforward and linear, but it doesn't feel too constrained and there is room for tactical experimentation, as well as secrets to find.

Most of the time you will be moving, sneaking, shooting, aiming and taking cover. Stealth has always been a staple of Syphon Filter, and it is well represented in Dark Mirror. Doing things quietly often ensures resistance along your path is lighter.

I worked on this series of games, and so, I decided that I needed to have my own copies once again. They were lost.

4.0 out of 5 stars SF Dark Mirror December 12, 2012

I liked the custom character feature from Omega Strain and would have liked to see it here too, but despite that, this game was enjoyable. There are some glitches in this game such as out-of-sync lip moving in cut scenes, and on the very final level, Gabe's guns as well as his left arm (when holing a gun) would be invisible. I've beaten the game already, but when I tried to play the final level again, the game would freeze.

This was the final missing piece to my Syphon Filter collection. Its too bad they cut content from the PSP version on the PS2 port to make it go from a M rating to a T rating

3.0 out of 5 stars some short-term entertainment November 29, 2007

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
A pretty standard action/espionage game. I got this at one of Gamestop's infamous 3-for-2 sale on used games. I ended-up selling the game pretty quickly on-line, so I spent a few hours over 3 nights whipping thru it on "easy" as well. Overall it was okay but not particularly great. I enjoyed the combat - the AI enemies were actually fairly good at evading my shots and the cut scenes were decent though the plot was contrived. I liked the series back on the PS1 but haven't played it in years. The price point seems excessive - should probably be around $20 for what you're getting - a limited port of a PSP game.
