Product Description

Within the past 20 years, scientists have discovered that many of our key mood hormones are regulated by light. Today, light therapy is prescribed by psychiatrists, psychologists and family doctors, and is considered the most effective non-pharmaceutical treatment for sad. Light therapy is a very effective treatment because it treats one of the primary causes of depression low serotonin levels in the brain. Most antidepressant drugs help boost serotonin levels by blocking reabsorption (reuptake) of free serotonin in the brain. Blocking absorption increases serotonin levels, and is directly related to improved mood, reduced anxiety and decreased depression. These drugs form a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIS) and increase serotonin levels by reducing absorption - but they do nothing to create more serotonin. A great deal of research has been performed over the past two decades, focusing specifically on the chemical processes responsible for the production of serotonin. In 2002 the prestigious journal science announced that a breakthrough discovery had been made. A new set of light sensitive receptors in the eye were discovered, and surprisingly, these receptors are not used for vision. This intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (IPRGCS), found in all vertebrates, was eventually linked directly to the production of serotonin, and the regulation of melatonin and other hormones. These receptors tend to be concentrated in the lower portion of the eyeball, and are primarily sensitive to blue light. This location samples the amount of blue light above our normal field of view, suggesting a lot about how our human system regulates itself through daily and seasonal variation, and why we tend to struggle in the darkness of winter. The patented syrcadian blue light therapy device has been engineered to stimulate these IPRGCS in a safe, effective and non-distracting manner.

I don't usually leave reviews, but this device is the best thing that's happened to me in years. I didn't realize the extent of my SAD until I got the light therapy unit. I even bought one for my brother. Even he raves about it.

It's convenient and does the job. I thought it was all hog wash until I tried it.

I've never written a review before, but felt so strongly about this device that I felt compelled to write one. I can't say enough good things about this light. To give some background, I've suffered from seasonal depression since my early teens. I've taken anti-depressants to help combat it, but they have not been as effective as I would have liked. After two weeks of using the light only at work, not only am I more "awake" early in the morning, but I'm better able to concentrate while working. An unexpected side effect is that I'm also sleeping better as well.

I initially purchased one of these for my monitor at work and after I found how well it worked, purchased one for my home monitor and another for my car. While I think they are a little expensive, I obviously thought the expense was worth it by purchasing the two others.

If I were to make one change to the device, I would give it an on/off switch.

This blue light is bright! I love the fact it has two settings. The only con is the mounting b/c it does not have any adjustment for the angle position. But I made this adjustment with my monitor positioning. I have used the light therapy glasses and hats before without feeling results. I will buy a second one with adapter to travel with in my truck soon.

I tried it for 3-4 weeks, 5-7 days a week (while working at the computer) instead of using my Verilux HappyLight. The Syrcadian unit is very small/compact and easy to attach to a flat monitor. The Verilux is very large, stands upright on its own, takes up a lot of room on my desk and is hard to get it within the required 24" from the face. (It's also more than twice the cost of this unit.) I agree with other users that the unit should have an on/off button so you don't have to wiggle out the USB connect each time to turn off. I also agree that for what you hold in your hands out of the box, it seems highly priced. Still, if it worked for me, I'd still be satisfied. But it did not. I give it two stars for the idea and attempt.

Mainly, I don't think this unit is bright enough. Yes, it uses BLUE light and my Verilux uses WHITE light. Maybe that doesn't require the same amount of brightness/coverage scientifically. I don't know. I only can say that during the time I switched to this light, I felt like the improvement I got from the Verilux light disappeared. So, I'm back to using the Verilux, only, and after a few days I do feel better again.

My background and why I purchased the device:
I have had severe seasonal depression for the past 15-20 years and it's been getting worse each year for the past several years. Symptoms usually begin in September each year and do not remit until March or April. The most severe symptom I've had is what I call "hibernation mode;" it's as if my body thinks it should hibernate like a bear in the fall and winter, which means I want to sleep all the time and I have no energy. No matter how much or how little I sleep, I'm still lethargic all the time. As a result, taking care of even minimum daily responsibilities has been a struggle. I've been on antidepressant medication for the past several years, but have never been able to get full remission of symptoms.

Results of using the device:
This is the first light therapy device I've ever used, so I wasn't sure what to expect in regards to how long it would take to have an effect on my depression symptoms, or if it would even work at all. I've been reading the medical literature on light therapy devices for depression since the mid 1990's but never purchased a device, mainly because of the exorbitant cost of the devices. I found this Syrcadian device at a reasonable cost here on Amazon, and after contacting Syrcadian to make sure it puts out a therapeutic level of lux (10,000 lux, which is in the upper part of the therapeutic range), I decided to give it a try. I started using the device for 1.5 hours per day, first thing each morning, on Sept. 19th and within the first 2-3 days there was a significant improvement in symptoms--namely energy level. After about a week the improvement leveled off and I've been hovering around "normal" now for the past couple of weeks.

This device works and works well. I like that it has high and low settings. It clips to a monitor, so you easily get your light dose while working or surfing as you normally would. It doesn't require any change in your habits whatsoever, which is always the best way to ensure you'll use something.

My doctor likes that it is at an appropriate and consistent distance from my eyes. I have found that it is more comfortable to put the light off center, so it is to the top left or top right of where I am focusing my eyes. A few times I have set it on top of my computer tower (which is on my desk, to the immediate left of my monitor), so it is even further to the top left of my field of vision. I'm not sure if it works as well, but I can use it longer and more comfortably, so there is a possible tradeoff. Supposedly the light only needs to enter your eyes, and does not need to be concentrated near your focal point.

I am very light sensitive, to the point where too much can give me a sick headache. Using this blue light in smaller doses helps prevent overstimulating my brain into migraine territory.

I was also pleased to see that there is recent research published that shows that light therapy is almost exactly as effective as Prozac. A big positive in my book is that this a one-time expense and doesn't require repeated visits to a doctor and refills at a pharmacy.
