5.0 out of 5 stars Good info regarding SP1 and R2
I've had this book for a while, and have meant to write a review. Finally took a few minutes to write out my thoughts!

I really like it. It covers well all of the aspects of SP1, including some of the newer elements, which a current SMS2003 administrator might have little previous knowledge of, like Native mode, and DCM. And has some really great...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Great So Far
I've read about 200 pages so far, and I don't love it. The writing style is very academic, and jumps around a lot. It comes across to me as more of a 1000-page theoretical whitepaper than a down-and-dirty book for getting things done. I would definitely choose a different book if I were starting over. Since I have it already, I'll see how it goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good info regarding SP1 and R2, November 9, 2009

I've had this book for a while, and have meant to write a review. Finally took a few minutes to write out my thoughts!

I really like it. It covers well all of the aspects of SP1, including some of the newer elements, which a current SMS2003 administrator might have little previous knowledge of, like Native mode, and DCM. And has some really great step-by-step guides for the most-often used reasons for ConfigMgr, like patching and Software Distribution. I especially appreciated the "Real World" and other tips when you are planning or configuring--the gotcha's that you might not see as obvious, but are obvious once you read their explanation.

As with any technical book, I always learn something new when reading a tech book. For me, I haven't had a work-related reason (yet) to dive deep into App-v with ConfigMgr, so reading that section gave me a good grounding for when that project comes up (because you know it will eventually).

5.0 out of 5 stars The SCCM book you were looking for, November 20, 2009

This is the third Configmgr-centric book on the market. And they finally got it right. While the previous books (from Sybex and Microsoft) were passible, they weren't a real **deep dive** into the app. Reading through this book, I get the impression some real love and care when into writing it.

I think OSD get short-shrifted again. Not nearly as bad as in the MS and Sybex books, but still gets less attention than it deserves. That said, its a minor quibble.

Being an SCCM admin for a company with 48k+ desktops and servers, I've been waiting for a good ConfigMgr reference guide. "SCCM2007 Unleashed" sits right in between my laptop and my monitor.

As a Microsoft Trainer who has been teaching SMS and Configuration Manager combined for over 12 years I found this book a must have for anyone who's working with System Center Configuration Manager. The content is complete and specific in detail. During all my classes on SCCM I bring to book to class to add to the content covered by the class material.

Without this book around your just not going to be able to traverse the day to day challenges of working with SCCM.

When I was looking for a book to learn SCCM from I could not find any reviews, not a very popular subject.
For the small group of people looking to learn this great program, I can recommend this book to learn the basics.
It teaches you all the steps to deployments and is a good refereance guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars better than a whitepaper :), April 5, 2010

anyone who has been in the systems management space (particularly microsoft systems management) would be able to tell you that the product line has grown to such an expansive set of tools that no one could be an expert in all of it anymore. unless you like reading through reams and reams of paper (and this statement is no discount to the book, as it is quite the table thumper), you'll want to pick up a copy of this book.

i like that the book is technical and detailed enough to use as reference material yet not so bogged down that it's hard to understand or follow. much of the content, however, is linked to deeper context if you need additional reading. aside from general how-to, there's a lot of ready tips, tricks, and code. most of the sections have a type of "from the field" note that is usually only found in books written by administrators with real world experience.

i know some of the authors personally and have deep respect for their work. they are all extremely knowledgeable, real-world admins.

good job all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Tip for the ConfigMgr professional, February 7, 2010

A couple of months ago I bought this ConfigMgr book, I didn't have high expectation about this book because a lot of the technical books you buy these days doesn't contains so much new information that you couldn't find on TechNet and other Internet forums. But to my surprise it's a fantastic book with a lot of deep technical drilldown in for example SQL stored procedures etc, but it also contains easy to understand description of the features as well as Microsoft System Management history. It's really speaks for its title Unleashed. I can really recommend this book for the hardcore ConfigMgr veterans as well as newbie's. All companies that are using ConfigMgr should have it on the bookshelf as a reference.

Outstanding SCCM resource that covers many scenarios you might run into while setting up or configuring SCCM. It is well set up and a great reference book. It is a bit dry so reading it from cover to cover might be tough. I recommend it as a above, a reference book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Reference for SCCM 2007, January 29, 2010

This review is from: System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 Unleashed (Paperback)
My focus has been on operating System Deployment(OSD) , this book provided a lot of answers and a wealth of additional information towards understanding the complexities of OSD. I'd like to give a shout out to Jason Sandys for his contribution to this book, his blog and knowledge of Operating Systems Deployment has been a major help

Thanks Jason, and all the members who put this excellent book together

2.0 out of 5 stars Good reference book, laborious read..., January 25, 2010
This review is from: System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 Unleashed (Paperback)
I've been in this business for a long time, and have been wanting to deploy the MS System Center Configuration Manager. I bought this book and the MS press book in preparation for doing this. The MS press book is on backorder. Lets just hope its a better read than this doorstop. This book is probably ok as a reference. Its terrible if you just want to get to know how to deploy Configmgr quickly. IT DRONES ON AND ON.....Please, I'd like to know who propagated the myth that we IT types like to read disorganzied drivel.... A re-write or a reorganization is needed. Its not a fun read....
