The older version of this product worked well, but this version has some obvious bugs. After hitting disaster, I find that their tech support is just non-existant (at least through their email web form interface).

After installing System Commander, my system (WinXP 64bit edition) would no longer boot. I lost my whole system.

Beside the major disaster, I found problems with Partition Commander. It reported that one primary partition was a logical drive in an extended partition. Other utilities (linux, part magic, windows) reported the correct layout. I didn't go any further after observing discernable bugs.

Long story short, if you like destroying your system with a buggy product and working with non-existant webform for tech support, then this is an ideal product...

1.0 out of 5 stars There has to be better., August 29, 2004

You can eventually get this software to do MOST of what they say it does but its cumbersome, messy and has a number of bugs. If I could I would definitely take advantage of any money back guarrantee, which they unfortunately don't offer!

I am at the point of buying some other software just so I can finish what I started.

There has to be something better out there so don't waste your money on this software!

Tried to install MS-Dos 6.22 on my XP and it crashed. Got this UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME blue screen of death and lost everything. I mean everything! Had to re-install XP and FORMAT THE HARD DRIVE to survive. This product is a disaster.

I agree with the guy who thinks version 8 should be closer to bug-free than version 5. I know DOS well enough to get around the problems that can be addressed on that level, but there are programming problems beyond DOS that are Greek to me. I also agree that customer support is non-existant.

Lucky for me I purchased the upgrade and therefore didn't throw away as much moeny as I might have otherwise.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buggy and unstable, May 4, 2007

The program was able to recognize a Linux installation on a second hard drive but unable to boot it. Then it suddenly began to start up with an update error window stating "Invalid registry key". And it wont't update or install again. I had used an earlier version and had problems years ago, and ended up reintalling Windows, which I may have to do again. Be very cautious about using any product which alters the MBR of your hard drive. In addition, when I initially was offered this program since I had another product from them, they offered to give me 2 additional programs for free, but did not do so. Emails to their sales department were not answered. Given this I am not optimistic about their tech support.

Interesting comments here about Sys Cmdr.. Perhaps my comments won't be accepted cuz they relate to an earlier version (5) but I think I can offer some insight. But first, let's remember that this is Amazon.com, and Amazon should not be tarnished cuz of some software company that can't get their act together. Amazon is okie-dokie with me. No gripe whatever.... I came here looking for info about this newer ver 8. I'm currently a ver. 5 user of Sys Cmdr. I will agree with others who state that V-Comm is bad on customer service. They are horrible. One fellow said "non-existent" I'll agree on that. However, I wonder about the bug reports. I would think vers. 8 to be less buggy than vers. 5. What many might think to be bugs is the way you go about things. Sys Cmdr is an animal one must "get acquainted with". If I hadn't learned my DOS, I would say I would've just thrown in the towel. I know, they don't publicize that, and this is not the best marketing, but being able to get down dirty in the DOS mud really helps. I've never tried to use Sys Cmdr installed to ANY version of Windows, only DOS 6.22. The only nasty bug I can complain of is when you have a partition with lots of data inside, Sys Cmdr will report "you're out of memory- cannot complete blah blah operation..." But that is not the end of the world. There is a way around this, if you think for a minute. But as for copying partitions- let's say, your startup, day-to-day partition, to a backup hard drive, ( 2nd hard drive), which is a mighty good idea before installing a new program, who's behavior is not known, Sys Cmdr will do the job. And if that new prog bombs out, you can just delete the screwed up partition on the boot drive and then COPY BACK the backup to the boot drive. This sounds like Windows Roll Back procedure, but it's better, much better. If you want a separate partition to run your favorite game, you can use Sys Cmdr to boot to just this partition, or boot to your Internet partition. I don't see a problem with the product once you know how this animal lives and breathes. I did bump the RESET button twice, rapidly (by mistake) one day, and soon discovered all my partitions were gone. How much of this do we blame to Sys Cmdr, and how much to the motherboard? Who knows. I've seen strange things happen. So I guess my big gripe is, V-Comm treats customers with little or no respect, and they don't have common sense in laying out the product or the instructions, but for those with that junk yard dog attitude, that just refuse to give up until their leg is eaten away, Sys Cmdr can be used to great advantage. When I migrated to Win 98se from the Macintosh 7 years ago, I would never have made it without Sys Cmdr version 5. It's a program that requires patience. One gentleman here said "read the book". He's right about that, even tho it's convoluted. The info is in there. You just gotta let it soak in. Once you see how it goes together, you'll learn to love Sys Cmdr, and at the same time, despise the stooges that produce it. The advantage of Sys Cmdr 8 is it allows use with Xp. One comment here gave the product the devil related to DOS. This man must be doing something wrong, because DOS is the simplest way to get Sys Cmdr running, the easiest of all. Sorry if this is too long. Delete if unacceptable. Hope this helps someone.

I read the manual throughly first and went for it. I was able to install with and with out and OS installed. I safely resized, created, combined partitions with no problems. I backs up inportant Windows files to be restored later if need be. If you need to safely try out other OSes than this is for you.

Although I have not used System Commander 8.0, I did feel the need to comment about V-Com and there Tech Support.

I am an advid user of V-Com's Partition Commander version 8 and since day one it is the Best thing since Sliced Bread! I have used it on all versions of windows with no problems. As far as Tech support goes with V-com e-mail support, I have never had a problem with them getting back to me with an answer to my question or a solution to a problem I was having. I have used V-Com's porducts for about 5 years or so now and will continue for as long as they serve a useful purpose for me.
