From the Back Cover

RF System Design of Transceivers for Wireless Communications is for RF Engineers and, in particular, those engineers focusing mostly on RF systems and RFIC design. The author develops systematic methods for RF systems design, complete with a comprehensive set of design formulas. Its focus on mobile station transmitter and receiver system design also applies to transceiver design of other wireless systems such as WLAN. The book is filled with detailed wireless systems design information, and addresses specifications that are critical for the design process.

Additional highlights include:

* Fundamental information on communications, signal and system theories

* Coverage of superheterodyne, direct-conversion, low-IF, and band-pass sampling radio architectures

* Frequency planning, system link budgeting, and performance evaluation of transmitters and receivers

* Nonlinearity effect analyses involving intermodulation, interferer blocking, spectrum regrowth and modulation

* Approaches for specifying RF ASICs on which mobile systems are built

* AGC systems, ADC dynamic range consideration and power management are addressed

* In-depth treatment of both theoretical and practical aspects of mobile station RF system design

This comprehensive reference work covers a wide range of topics from general principles of communication theory, as it applies to digital radio designs to specific examples on implementing multimode mobile systems. Wireless engineering professionals will definitely find this an invaluable reference book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good reference on RF System analysis, April 9, 2006

This review is from: RF System Design of Transceivers for Wireless Communications (Hardcover)
I came across this book after I went through a few books on RF system design. I guess I can confidently say that the book covers the most important aspects of the RF system design such as noise figure, inter-modulation and adjacent channel power ratio calculations. The cascaded system analysis (Noise figure and OIP calculations)are explained in a very straightforward and easy to follow manner. Of particular interest is the section on the architectural trade-off analysis. This section provides a very clear overview of fundamental issues that impact RF system design in most practical environments.

This book has room for improvement though. In particular, the ADC noise figure analysis for the band-pass sampling (appendix 3D) does not cover the ADC non-linearity, the jitter noise and the aliasing due to sub-sampling. Moreover, most of the examples are around the mobile hand-set systems. In my opinion expanding the analysis to the base-station could benefit some readers in this area.
Reader can find himself annoyed by many typo errors in the bibliography section. I am expecting these minor issues to be resolved over the subsequent editions. Overall, I recommend this book for RF system designers who need an up-to-date encyclopedia in this area.

I have to say this is one of the books I have benefied the most from. It shows the auther truely understands the topic both from theoritical and practical aspects.
