5.0 out of 5 stars one of the only talented and original bands
i have been listening to system for a little over a year and it seams that every time i listen to a song i catch something new in the music or a notice a stronger emotion in the pitch of his voice. I am always playing it for kids who have never listened to it before and the way it always catches them off guard and strikes them makes me an even bigger fan. The c.d. is...

2.0 out of 5 stars Review for extra material
The 4 live tracks here are very poor. The guitar-playing is barely audible and the vocals are huffed and puffed. "War" was pretty good, but "Sugar" was truly awful. The other two were accessable. System Of A Down weren't a really good live band in 1999. Their studio music was very technical and hard to play live. However, on the Pleadge Of Allegence Tour around the time...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums of the 90s, November 23, 2000
By
"timmyacid" (Colorado Springs, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: System of a Down (Audio CD)
System of a Down's frenitic, violent, dark, angry debut album rates right up there with the likes of RATM, Tool, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana, who also had absolutely fantastic debuts. As soon as you hit the "play" button, SOAD invades your room with their unique, bleak, and fascinating sound. The album is foreboding, with lyrics that make you question their mental stability. The trippy, social distortion-charged message, the booming, bowel-moving bass, the insane guitars along with the machine-gun rat-tat-tat of the drums makes for an unsettling experience that opens up your mind to a whole new horizon of music and thinking. But with an album of such magnitude as this, SOAD is going to have a hard time topping it. I just hope they stay true to their roots. It would be sad to see them waste their talent and sell out, becoming just another Rage-cum-Korn band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer lyrics, pounding bass, and lots of screaming, January 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: System of a Down (Audio CD)
The whole CD is great, it's a must have. SOAD is the first band in a long time that really stands apart from the rest. The first time I heard Serj Tankian, I thought of Danny Elfman, in that he uses his voice in an unconventional manner. Screaming, whispering, fluctuating the tone - you gotta love it when he sings "The ships are multiplying day after day, Sir" in Suggestions. These guys are cutting, bleeding edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Original, August 23, 2000

Amir X. Tajakin (Orange County, California) - See all my reviews

System Of A Down has to be the most original band on the nu-metal scene right now, spare Incubus and Mindless Self Indulgence. They have one of the best singers I have ever heard in Serj Tankian, with his inane ramblings, psychotic whimpers, and whisper to a scream verses/choruses. He is original and charismatic, and he holds an amazing stage presence. If you have a chance to see them live, go see them, they are amazing. Serj holds not only personal anger, he also holds anger towards the Armenian government, the country where the band originates. They are a political band, believe it or not, although they do sound a little like the metal scenes' comedians at first listen. The band are all excellent musicians, and every instrument is very clearly brought out by Rick Rubin. Shavo's bass is excellent and is very easy to hear. There are even occasional bass solos on this masterpiece. Daron's guitar work is also wonderful, and he often explodes into huge choruses and such. John is a good drummer, and very consistent as well. They all come together to make one of the most awesome bands I have ever heard. They are a mix of funk, rap, metal, folk, and politics. No one dared do this kind of thing before them, and that is why they are so original. My favorite songs on here are P.L.U.C.K., Sugar, Spiders, War?, CUBErt, and Know. This one also comes with a limited edition ECD that has four of their best tracks live, although I really don't think it does justice to their great live show. It also has the video for Sugar, which is nothing short of superbly produced. Also check out Nuclear Rabbit, Tribal Disco Noise, Linea 77, and Toxic Field Mice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique among uniques, April 14, 2000

System of a down are the best band I have ever heard. Their style is the most unique. Korn and Rage against the machine have their own style, but system of a down is totally different from them. People who compare system of a down to Korn or Rage against the machine are totally wrong. I have heard Korn and Rage Against The Machine and I find very few things similar (such as the speed and the hard music). System of a Down are beautiful, comical and politically motivated, which makes them stand out from the croud full of lovers, and the ones who have lost their love. Go get their CD if you want to hear something different, something revolutionary.

5.0 out of 5 stars System just rocks, April 8, 2000

I first heard Sugar on the radio, and loved it. Then I downloaded the Spiders mp3, and loved it. I got the cd, and it blew me away. The vocalist's voice is incredible, he can scream like the best of metal singers, and he can make his voice sound really funny too, and it works either way. Some of the songs are almost laughable, they sound like something out of a circus, but its a great new edge for metal music. There isn't one track that isn't as good as the rest. I can't wait for their next album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally something new, April 7, 2000

System of a Down is incredible. I am a metalhead, but even if your not you can still appreciate music like this. The variation in the songs is incredible. Although it most of it maybe a little to fast and loud for some, its a new sound for metal, which was something it definelty needed. I had heard one too many variations of the original KoRn style before this. I also enjoy the different meanings of the songs. For example "Peephole" goes into marijuana usage, and "Suite Pee" goes into the disorganization of religion, and "War" shows how we think we're so advanced yet the only way we have to settle our disputes is to kill. Anyway, this is definelty a 5 star album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nowhere To Go But Up, March 23, 2000

This review is from: System of a Down (Audio CD)
The new millenium has brought forth another top-notch metal group. System of a Down are set with original, catchy, and passionate vocals, combined with explosive and delicious music. It would be impossible to choose a favorite track, yet "Spiders" (their second, mellow hit single), "DDevil", and their marijuana-debate tune "Peephole" stand out as metal classics. Do NOT be narrow-minded; System of a Down will blow you away.
