Solid Parenting Advice,
By
This review is from: Systemic Parenting (Paperback)
Gaskill writes an excellent book from the perspective of a practicioner for parents. He skips over the deep theory and confusing language of psychology to focus on a long list of pragmatic maxims for effective parenting. As the father of twins boys, I have already put some of his advise to good use.

Focuses on a parent child relationship rather than how-tos,
By Gagewyn (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Systemic Parenting (Paperback)
Basically the approach in Systemic Parenting to focus on building a relationship with your child. It isn't a how-to book in terms of discipline them this way, potty train them by this age, etc. So it will more help you to see the "big picture" than give you immediate advice on what you need to do. Of course with a grasp of the big picture you can figure out how to treat specific situations. So the advice in Systemic Parenting is more verstile, but less immediate.
I really appreciate the focus on the relationship and bond between parent and child. It is something that tends to be taken for granted in lieu of more immediate issues. However the advice here is not immediately practical, and the presentation is text-booky and dull. I recommend passing on Systemic Parenting. ... The premise of Systemic Parenting is an excellent one, but the presentation is not so hot.

Too technical,
This review is from: Systemic Parenting (Paperback)
This book was not our cup of tea. My husband and I like more practical guidance that does not read in such therapeutic terms. We have a 3 year old.

A great book that sparks thoughts,
By Sherry (NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Systemic Parenting (Paperback)
I read this book from cover to cover in a year. It is not very easy to read, nor easy to digest. However, it does worth the efforts! It addresses long term problems in parenting rather than immediate solutions such as how to stop the kids from whining in the store right now. Following the instructions in this book requires commitment to good parenting. It does not work if you try a day and then stop. I can see the efforts paying back in ten years or more when my kid grow up into a respectable person with most of the important skills to live a successful life. It should be a book that needs to be revisited periodically since it is hard to remember so much information all at once.

Awesome Big Picture View of Parenting,
This review is from: Systemic Parenting (Paperback)
I have read a number of parenting and marriage books recently and this is the best. His overview of the effect the family system has on parenting provides insights I have not discovered elsewhere.
I believe it will make my family and even my marriage stronger. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who desires a good relationship with another human being--whether it is a child, spouse, parent, coworker, friend or whomever. It is about much more than parenting. It is about relationships and communications between people. His concept of certain methods being "more helful" and others "less helpful" rather than calling them "good" or "bad" makes it easier to make changes because there is less reason to become entrenched or defensive. An excellent book. Definitely the most clinical I have read, but with many meaningful real life examples.

A book about everything, maybe everything is about parenting,
This review is from: Systemic Parenting (Paperback)
There is a short review on the cover of Systemic Parenting that sums up this book pretty well. It states: "It's almost as though this book is about everything - or maybe everything is about parenting." J.M. Shaw, PH.D. I'm not sure I could put better words to this book or review it more effectively. This is must read for any parent wanting to improve the quality of the parent-child relationship. My copy is becoming pretty dog eared as I find myself returning to it over and over again.
