4.0 out of 5 stars T is not FV's best, but it still has some great tracks, February 21, 2001

This review is from: T ( 2 ep) (Audio CD)
Being a remix album, T probably will not win anyone's attention by itself. If you are a long time fan of Funker Vogt though, and liked their previous album, Maschine Zeit, you will likely find T enjoyable. Subspace is the best track on here, and will not disappoint any Funker Vogt fan. The other new songs are pretty good, though not quite as good as the ones found on FV's full albums. Most Of the remixes aren't as good as the originals in my opinion, although they are still entertaining in their own right. Unless you are a devoted fan of Funker Vogt who has to have all of their released material (like me), you may want to listen to T before buying it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Funker's gone synthpop!!!, February 13, 2001
By
This review is from: T ( 2 ep) (Audio CD)
Man, was I excited when I heard "T" was coming out. Funker Vogt's last double/remix CD, "Killing Time Again", contained some of their best work: "Vision" and "Evil's Birth" still stand out as two of my favorite FV songs. I checked out the track listing for "T"....four new songs! All right! Especially after "Maschine Zeit", which I thought was a very good album. It was with much anticipation that I put "T" in the ol' cd player. My final reaction: Oh no! Synthpop City! You won't find the aggression of past FV work here. Their trademark vocal distortion is almost non-existent, less so than on "Maschine Zeit," and the musical focus tends to be more on synthesizer melodies than hard electronic rhythms. Don't get me wrong, though: "Subspace" is a GREAT track that's about, believe it or not, first-person shooter computer games (Quake, for example, which I happen to be a huge fan of -- I've even adopted SUBSPACE as my Quake III on-line persona), but despite the infectiously catchy chorus it doesn't sound like Funker Vogt. "A Dream" has a nice groove to it as well, but "Body Count" and "Follow Me" sound more like Fictional or Ravenous than traditional Funker Vogt. It seems to me that the industrial field is veering more toward synthpop, especially since bands like VNV Nation and Covenant are gaining legions of fans worldwide. Not that this is a bad thing -- electronic music needs this kind of exposure, and I'm sure synthpop fans will LOVE "T", especially the Maschinen and Traum remixes, which are more poppy than the album versions. There's little here to satisfy the industrial fan, however. The closest thing is the Beborn Beton remix of "Under Deck", which uses jagged, noisy electronics to the fullest. I'd also say that the bunkerromantik mix of "Black Market Dealers" is very nice -- it does away with percussion entirely and turns the track into a haunting eulogy for victims of WWII. Still, it's hard to believe that this is the same FV who gave us "Time of Dreams" and "Schizophrenia." Personally, I hope that "T" isn't a sign of things to come for Funker Vogt.

3.0 out of 5 stars Downward spiral for FV?, April 17, 2001
By
David N (Tampa, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: T ( 2 ep) (Audio CD)
Over the years, Funker Vogt has refined themselves from the days of Thanks for Nothing and We came to Kill, through the great Killing Time Again and Execution Tracks CDs, into the lackluster Maschine Zeit sound. With T, Funker Vogt provides only four new songs out of the fourteen included in the set. Gone are the harsh, distorted vocals. Instead, there is a poppy, sentimental sound that is not what FV started out as. Songs about the Oklahoma City bombing, and the Internet seem oddly out of place compared to their old standbys like Civil War and Thanks for Nothing. Funker Vogt still provides their trademark pounding beats, but the rest is watered down and not very satisfying for long time fans. Perhaps if you like some of Funker Vogt's side bands like Ravenous and Fictional, this set would be more appealing as the sound is more like them. The remixes are generally average, but some, like Beborn Beton's version of Under Deck, are lame and unrecognizable.
