T-41 Mescalero earned an Honorable Mention in the Nonfiction History category of the Military Writers Society of America 2011 Book Awards.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Walt Shiel, Jan Forsgren and Mike Little have covered the story of the T-41 Mescalero, and other military 172s, in a wide-reaching and exciting way that paves new ground for the pilot, the aviation buff, and the historian. This volume contains personal stories, vivid descriptions, and more than a little humor -- but it also provides specifications and serials that have never previously been assembled in one place." --from the Foreword by Robert F. Dorr (author of Air Combat)
In 2006, the ubiquitous Cessna Model 172 Skyhawk turned 50, with a seldom-heralded military record almost as long. Now, for the first time, the Skyhawk's military history is revealed in all its depth and breadth, covering its use by the armed forces of 54 countries. Cessna delivered 867 T-41 Mescaleros (the military version of the 172) in four distinct models to countries around the world -- plus another 158 off-the-shelf 172s, with many still serving into the 21st century. T-41 Mescalero captures this extensive history in print, complete with stories and photographs from around the world.
The roster of countries whose armed force fly, or have flown, the 172 reads like a list of United Nations members -- from the US to Latin America's Venezuela, Africa's Angola to Asia's Vietnam, and Europe's Austria to the Middle East's United Arab Emirates. T-41s and military 172s have spanned the globe to provide outstanding and cost-effective service for almost five decades.
More Cessna 172s have been produced than any other aircraft model in history. Doubtless more pilots have had their initial aviation indoctrination in the Cessna 172 than in any other aircraft. Wth new 172s still rolling off the assembly lines, its remarkable story will continue. With many armed forces still operating 172s and T-41s, its military story is far from closed.
Filled with operational stories, little-known applications, and 194 photos (80% in full color), T-41 Mescalero explains how, why, and when this stalwart Cessna has fulfilled its varied military roles!
Air Fan magazine, Nov 2007:
Traitant de chaque variante et de tous les utilisateurs, proposant en sus une sélection de pages tirées due manuel technique, cette étude est la meilleure sur le sujet. (Treating every variant and all operators, with a selection of drawings from the technical manuals, this book is the best on this subject.)
Military Writers Society of America
This book has 180+ pages. Even though I had flown the airplane, I learned a lot about the training techniques and philosophy of the training. Seeing the training from the instructor's point of view was very interesting. This is the definitive book on the T-41. I can highly recommend it.
A universal guide to an extremely versatile and workhorse aircraft, a story that richly deserves telling. -- Dan Hagedorn (author of Latin American Air Wars, 1912-1969)
This long overdue tribute to the Cessna T-41 Mescalero is well researched, well written and beautifully illustrated. -- Walter J. Boyne, author and historian
More About the Author
Although born in Michigan, I was raised across the US and around the world as an Air Force 'brat.' I started school on the Pacific island of Guam during the Korean War and finished high school in France during the Vietnam War. Shortly after my graduation, Charles DeGaulle kicked all American forces out of the country, but I swear it had nothing to do with me.
Subsequently, I earned a BSEE degree from Michigan State University, a commission and pilot wings from the Air Force, and the hand of a charming young woman named Kerrie. During 20 years as an Air Force pilot (including time in the Michigan Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves), I logged 3400 flying hours, plus another 400 hours as a civilian pilot.
As a civilian engineer, I worked on the B-2 bomber program and the F-16, F-35, and F-22 fighter programs and recently retired from Lockheed Martin. I have completed master's degree coursework in astronomy and business administration, but am now the publisher and managing partner for Slipdown Mountain Publications LLC/Jacobsville Books.
Since 1992, I have written for magazines in the US, England, and Australia and authored three military aviation history books, three novels, and two collections of short stories.
Kerrie and I have two daughters and two grandchildren and live on a 40-acre Michigan farm populated with horses, cats, dogs, and an abundance of wildlife.
5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly 'reader friendly', February 3, 2007
This review is from: T-41 Mescalero: The Military Cessna 172. (Paperback)
The collaborative effort of avaition experts Walt Shiel, Jan Forsgren, and Mike Little, "T-41 Mescalero: the Military Cessna 172) is the first volume in a planned 'Cessna Warbirds' series from Slipdown Mountain Publications. Enhanced with an informative foreword by aviation historian Robert F. Dorr, "T-41 Mescalero" is a complete history of the quintessential pilot trainer that for some fifty years had served the military aviation forces of 53 countries. Cessna delivered 867 T-41 Mescalero (the military version of the Cessna 172) in four distinct models to the armed forces of the US and a series of other nations that range from Venezuela, Angola and Viet Nam, to Austria and the United Arab Emirates. Now this extensive history, enhanced with personal stories and profusely illustrated with photography, provides a complete record of a military training aircraft that has been produced more than any other aircraft model in the history of aviation. Thoroughly 'reader friendly' "T-41 Mescalero" is a seminal and indispensable addition to personal, academic, and community library Military Aviation reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
5.0 out of 5 stars The book to end all books on the subject !, January 18, 2007
This review is from: T-41 Mescalero: The Military Cessna 172. (Paperback)
A home run! This book is packed with little known information on the Cessna 172 and all it versions from the very beginning. Walt tracks them down in the US and abroad with well written, concise and to the point language. This book is hard to put down. It is a fitting tribute to argueably the most dependable aircraft still in production. Thank you Walt. This ones is a keeper!
