This full-size, 1,400-watt iron is great for household ironing--it has a slick, tough, scratch-resistant soleplate, which provides a smooth glide, and an anticlogging valve to combat mineral buildup. The valve pulls out of the handle so you can soak it in vinegar or lemon juice and so you can shake water and impurities through the soleplate. For safety, the iron shuts off in 30 seconds if left horizontal or tipped over, and in eight minutes if left vertical. The T-Fal 1656 has a large (7-ounce) transparent water tank. A variable-steam control and a temperature-control dial allow you to make fine adjustments, and both a misting spray and a steam burst work on stubborn wrinkles and help create sharp creases. The soleplate carries a 10-year warranty against defects, and the iron has a one-year warranty. --Fred Brack

T-Fal's Ultraglide plus Iron is an exceptional tool. The sole plate heats quickly and the steam vents deliver a good burst of steam when the steam function is engaged. The durilion sole plate is easy to keep clean. The water tank level is visible at all times. The automatic shut-off engages after 8 minutes of unuse, but the sole plate reheats in about 15 seconds. The handle is large and easy to grip.
The only feature that I did not like was the procedure for cleaning which seemed quite tedious, although it did the job. Overall I would give the iron a five star rating.

The iron has actually made me like ironing. It's smooth and has powerful steam to do the worst cotton...also the iron isn't too heavy. It has atomatic shutoff if you forget and I love the base...very easy to clean too.

This iron is wonderful. I hate ironing and this iron makes it bearable. It just glides over the clothing and you do not have to push down on it for it to get the wrinkles out. I definitely recommend this iron!
