Product Description

Amazon.com Review

This full-size, 1,400-watt iron is great for household ironing--it has a slick, tough, scratch-resistant soleplate, which provides a smooth glide, and an anticlogging valve to combat mineral buildup. The valve pulls out of the handle so you can soak it in vinegar or lemon juice and so you can shake water and impurities through the soleplate. For safety, the iron shuts off in 30 seconds if left horizontal or tipped over, and in eight minutes if left vertical. The T-Fal 1824 has a pivoting 11.8-foot cord, a large water tank, vertical steam for removing wrinkles in hanging garments, variable steam for making fine adjustments, and both a misting spray and a steam burst for dealing with stubborn wrinkles and creating sharp creases. The soleplate carries a 10-year warranty against defects, and the iron has a one-year warranty. --Fred Brack

5.0 out of 5 stars As much as anyone can love an iron, July 17, 2003
This review is from: T-Fal 1824 Avantis Iron (Kitchen)
I can't believe I'm writing an iron review. But this iron is worth it! It really delivers all that it promises.
Living in the desert, I line dry almost everything. Ironing is essential if you don't want to look like you slept in your clothes. I've tried a bunch of different irons, usually not wanting to spend any money on something I hate so much.
Pros: It's weighty so you don't feel as though you must actually press down when ironing. The plate surface really does glide over your clothes. The water reservoir holds enough to keep you going for awhile. There is plenty of steam. That was my biggest complaint about previous irons, that wimpy little wisp of steam. It turns itself off (I am guilty of leaving the iron on all day). Haven't tried the vertical steam option yet, but I'm glad it has it. Price was reasonable.
Cons: No matter how perfect this thing is, it's still an iron and you must actually use it. But really, there are no cons here.
Until self ironing natural fabric clothing is invented, get one of these! You might even find that (gasp!) ironing's not as bad as you thought.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent iron!, July 7, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: T-Fal 1824 Avantis Iron (Kitchen)
I surveyed a lot of irons before picking the T-Fal. Known to me mainly for their non-stick cookware, I wasn't sure if they knew how to make an iron. But, a few good reviews and the affordable price convinced me to lay down my coin. I am very happy with the performance! True to their marketing, the iron slides very easily over all fabrics (especially tricky ones like silk, rayon, etc.) when the temp is set properly. The steam is very powerful, and the steam blast instantly removes stubborn wrinkles. It even comes with it's own water refill container (which tips over easily, unfortunately...) Some reviews I've read found the controls difficult to access, but they really are pretty easy to use. The only thing keeping me from giving it a "5" rating is that it's difficult to gauge the water level. In the right light, you can vaguely see the water level through large blue frosted window. But usually I can't and end up overfilling the reservoir. Seems like many irons these days have this problem, though, and the features and ease of use still make this a great iron in my mind.

This is the third iron I have purchased in the last 2 years. The other two were supposed to be by the Best manufacturer. Neither one was very good . I decided to try the avantis . I love it. It does a great job I am a quilter and am constantly ironing fabric plus I do our regular ironing weekly.I highly recommend this iron.
