I can't believe I'm writing an iron review. But this iron is worth it! It really delivers all that it promises.
Living in the desert, I line dry almost everything. Ironing is essential if you don't want to look like you slept in your clothes. I've tried a bunch of different irons, usually not wanting to spend any money on something I hate so much.

I had a Tefal model 1607 iron for about ten years. It was a wonderful iron but it finally gave out after hitting the floor for the thousandth time. Such a track record certainly dictated another Tefal (now T-Fal) replacement. I read the reviews on this Avantis model, found it in my price range and decided to purchase this. 5.0 out of 5 stars As much as anyone can love an iron, July 17, 2003

Pros: It's weighty so you don't feel as though you must actually press down when ironing. The plate surface really does glide over your clothes. The water reservoir holds enough to keep you going for awhile. There is plenty of steam. That was my biggest complaint about previous irons, that wimpy little wisp of steam. It turns itself off (I am guilty of leaving the iron on all day). Haven't tried the vertical steam option yet, but I'm glad it has it. Price was reasonable.
Cons: No matter how perfect this thing is, it's still an iron and you must actually use it. But really, there are no cons here.
Until self ironing natural fabric clothing is invented, get one of these! You might even find that (gasp!) ironing's not as bad as you thought.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent iron!, July 7, 2001

This review is from: T-Fal 1824 Avantis Iron (Kitchen)
I surveyed a lot of irons before picking the T-Fal. Known to me mainly for their non-stick cookware, I wasn't sure if they knew how to make an iron. But, a few good reviews and the affordable price convinced me to lay down my coin. I am very happy with the performance! True to their marketing, the iron slides very easily over all fabrics (especially tricky ones like silk, rayon, etc.) when the temp is set properly. The steam is very powerful, and the steam blast instantly removes stubborn wrinkles. It even comes with it's own water refill container (which tips over easily, unfortunately...) Some reviews I've read found the controls difficult to access, but they really are pretty easy to use. The only thing keeping me from giving it a "5" rating is that it's difficult to gauge the water level. In the right light, you can vaguely see the water level through large blue frosted window. But usually I can't and end up overfilling the reservoir. Seems like many irons these days have this problem, though, and the features and ease of use still make this a great iron in my mind.

It does a great job I am a quilter and am constantly ironing fabric plus I do our regular ironing weekly.I highly recommend this iron.

I've had this iron about three weeks and am sorry I bought it, now.

The iron appears to have great safety features, but it is the 'small' things that really bug me about this Avantis. When I read that you could not see the water level in the iron, I really doubted this opinion. How could you not see the water level in the 'clear' plastic window? Well, the opinion was true - you cannot see the water level in the upper part of the iron and the T-Fal filler cup in the box is big enough to easily overfill the beast.

The second gripe I have is that the knobs on the temperature selection and steam control under the handle are far too big and very easy subjected to unintentional changes when you grip the iron. I tried prying them off, but I'm afraid of busting these flimsey items. I have already scortched a pair of synthetic fabric pants by unknowingly hitting the temperature knob.

Tefal had their old versions down perfect - but not now.

I hate ironing. No other way to put it. In 1993, I bought my first T-fal iron in Australia. When I moved to the US in 2000, I had to sell my T-fal iron because of the different voltage in the US (7 years old iron and going strong). I bought a Sunbeam iron in 2000 in the US and I hated everything about it. It was difficult to use and took forever to iron clothes. The sole plate was small and it often leaked water. So after 2 years of torture, I finally tossed it out the window and bought myself a new iron in September 2002. T-fal Avantis of course. This is the best iron ever. Reasonable in price and very easy to use. No leaks, only need to iron an area once and it has automatic shutoff. I LOVE IT. I don't have to spend hours ironing. I don't have time to do that. This iron actually makes ironing enjoyable to some degree. Personally, I can't think that anyone could enjoy ironing. However, this iron does do it for me. I am happy with the results and I spend less time ironing.

The sole plate is big and doesn't (DOESN'T) stick to anything. Iron over zippers without destroying the plate.
The cord is long and it rotates 360 degrees. Go out and buy it now. Forget other irons. Really, seriously! I don't work for T-fal or Amazon.com. I'm just a housewife who hates ironing and I needed to vent today. :) Oh, buy it from Amazon.com too, the price is great, free ship and fast shipping. They have been good to me. Have a great day and maybe you might too enjoying ironing for once. Hooorooo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Iron for Someone Who Hates to Iron, October 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: T-Fal 1824 Avantis Iron (Kitchen)
Before purchasing this iron, I literally went months without ironing. Guilt finally prompted me to do some research into better irons, and after reading reviews I decided to purchase the Avantis. I wanted vertical steam, as well as the anti-spitting and the safety features offered on this model. I compared the features with those of the leading brand of irons, and found I got more for my money with the T-fal. The Avantis has lived up to its billing! The steam is great on this iron - my happy husband left for work yesterday after commenting on how crisp his slacks were. (A first, believe me.) I am pleased with the vertical steam output and the way the soleplate glides easily across the clothes. I previously hated to iron, but the Avantis makes it easy. Having great equipment makes a BIG difference!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a necessary evil, November 30, 2001

This review is from: T-Fal 1824 Avantis Iron (Kitchen)
Face it, ironing is a necessary evil. Unless you are one of those who finds ironing relaxing, it's not fun. For me, if the iron is a good one, I can just about stand it.

I had to replace my European T-fal iron when I moved to the US. I looked carefully at all the choices here to come up with an equivalent one that would work as well--the European 220V model really was nice and I was sad to leave it behind. The Avantis has the same special coated sole plate (it glides better than plain metal.) Vertical steaming is a great feature. So is the anti-calc (hard water deposit remover.) You can put in any old plain tap water. You cannot use the fancy scented stuff, so beware.

Ironing is, if not a pleasure, certainly not a pain with this nice large, full-featured iron.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am a lead associate in a small appliance department, October 17, 2001
This review is from: T-Fal 1824 Avantis Iron (Kitchen)
I sell this great iron on a daily basis, i truely believe in this
product. the fact that it has a 10 year warantee on the sole-
plate is amazing. The iron has a sleek design, and the vertical
steam is really there when you need to use it, the vertical steam
feature works so well you wouldn't even consider buying a garment
steamer, the steam that this iron produces is that good! This
iron holds true to temmperature and will not let you down in any-
way! This T-Fal iron is even better than the top model of Rowenta! It is priced right also, that is a definate plus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great iron, well worth the money!!, April 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: T-Fal 1824 Avantis Iron (Kitchen)
This iron is perhaps the best small appliance purchase I have made (and I have a weakness for small appliances). Because virtually all my clothing is of natural fiber, it's necessary to iron 90% of it before wearing (I guess I'm dating myself, but I still like the appearance of ironed clothing). This iron heats up FAST and delivers wonderful steam when called for. It is easy to fill, clean, and has great safety features, such as the auto shut off when tipped and the same when not in use for eight minutes. My linen clothes have never looked better OR have been easier to iron since using this. I LOVE THIS IRON!! Even my husband likes it, once the settings were explained to him!! The ONLY drawback is the lack of cord storage; it would be great if it had one of those gizmos that wraps aroung the folded cord and keeps it all together neatly, as no matter how well I wind the cord around the iron it manages to slip down and run wild on the shelf. Not a big problem though. If you are ready and willing to get beyond discount store and tag-sale irons, do as I did and BUY THIS!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant experience, January 16, 2004

I got this iron for a Christmas present. The first one had a leak from the buttons in the handle. Amazon, as always, was great. They expedited a new one via FedEx 2 day air and picked up the other one from the house. Not all products will come off the assembly line perfect the first time.

I like the iron. I have owned a Rowenta and was going to buy a new one, but was dissapointed with mine and the latest reviews were also dissapointing. My Rowenta's stainless steel bottom kept getting coated with melted dust. Then you have to buy a special potion from Rowenta to remove it. That iron was expensive enough without having to buy that. Anyway, this iron gets very hot and irons cotton well. Lot's of steam too. The auto steam is nice too because it keeps you from trying to shove too much water through the iron and thus causing some unwanted drips. With the iron up to max hot and auto on the steam, this thing is a steam engine. Don't wear your glasses because they will fog up.

What I don't like is that with the light blue water container you can't tell what the current water level is. I have to keep moving the iron around to see where the water level is. Any color besides light blue would work. That's why it lost a star. Other than that it's a good iron and cost (...) less than a Rowenta.

An update: I have been using this iron for a while now. I am very satisfied with this purchase. Water does seem to leak a little on my hand from the fill hole. I think what happens is that when you iron the water sloshes around and then when you put the iron in the sitting position then a little comes out of the fill hole. Not a big deal though. Lot's of steam and nothing sticks to the base. Much better than my Rowenta. I just told my mom to buy one.
