This toaster has a nice bagel setting that toasts only the cut side of the bagel. The toasting is nice, though slow, if you don't mind waiting about three mnutes for your toast, you will be more than satisfied. The slot length is standard bread size and will not accommodate rye bread. The crumb tray is cheaply made, and out of the box, one of the crumb trays would not stay in, it was too much hassle to return the item on account of the crumb tray, though it is an annoyance..... P.S. the above review was written upon receipt of the toaster, after a few months of use I would give it a 1 star. The toaster is now permanently etched and marred where the lever does not clear the face of the toaster. It is SLOW. ... you could do much better than this poorly made toaster...PPS, this postscript is added after the toaster ejected my toast and sent it flying across the counter onto the floor. True story. I am going to junk it and buy another toaster.

1.0 out of 5 stars BIG DISSAPPOINTMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!, September 20, 2004

I am so disappointed with our toaster, after waiting months to finally purchase this toaster, I have been so exctied, and now today it arrived. I have tried bagels, waffles and bread in it today and it's no different than my silly bargain toaster I just threw away.

There are 9 toast settings, from very lightly toasted to very, very dark toasting (according the the directions), but to get any darkening at all, in a single toast, I have to set the toaster to level 7 out of 9. The Waffle setting is a joke (and it as well as the bagel setting only work on one set of slots), and the memory is just as silly - who can't remember what number they like their toast at - and even if that is a problem there are four memory settings, so you'd have to be able to remember which memory setting is the one you want!

Once I finally did figure out how to get the bread to actually toast, it was uneven, on both sides.

My other problem is the bagel setting, which I suppose could be used for Englsih Muffins, but it is called a bagel setting - anyhow, it only toasts the cut side, and warms the other side, and what do you get - a chewy bagel - once it cools down. Sure it is great in the couple minutes it's piping hot, but once it begins to cool down the outside of the bagel just gets chewy!

The most frustrating thing - is the directions are not clear. They don't specify what the Bagel and Waffle setting even do!

My husband mocked me for spending so much money on this toaster, and I insisted - it's worth every penny to have quality kitchen appliances - and now, I've eaten my words, my pride has taken a beating and I'm on my way out the door to return this waste of money!

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm Very Upset!, March 24, 2006
This review is from: T-Fal Avanti Elite Toaster 4T Model 2 (Kitchen)
I got this toaster today and after reading the reviews, I didn't think it could happen to me.

I opened the package and it's all rusted and corroded! Don't they have people who check before the merchandise is shipped out.

You can tell, the rust had been there for a long time, even the plastic bag that it was wrapped in had rust stains on it.

The package was dry so there was no leakage after sending it out so it had to have been rusted before it was even mailed. Do they think customers are idiots? Who in their right mind would even contemplate keeping an item in this kind of condition.

So back it goes. I did not want a replacement, just my money returned.

2.0 out of 5 stars More form than function, January 16, 2005

This toaster looks good, no doubt. It is slow, and the resultant toasted items are barely warm to the touch. The slow cook time is a plus for pop-tarts. If you use both sides of the toaster and a coffee maker on the same circuit, chances are you will blow the circuit like I did.

The display is pretty cool and lets you see the exact time remaining but the memory feature is not really very practical. It is also physically large and the short cord only comes out of the right side, so placement needs to be well thought out and near the outlet.

It also has a helper button to lift the toast slightly (very slightly) to help with removal. The problem is that you HAVE to use this to remove the toast and it doesn't "lock" so you need two hands to remove anything from the toaster. Seems petty but after years of using one hand to get the toast out, using two is a hassle.

This would be nice in a model home or to impress company, but save your old toaster for those times when you actually want to make toast.

I've read some good and some very bad reviews of this toaster. I ordered it for $39.99 with free shipping a couple of weeks ago, and after receiving it and using it daily, Ihave nothing bad to say about it. It works flawlessly and looks great. Sounds like some people received defective units with rust etc.., but my guess is that Amazon has corrected the matter.

3.0 out of 5 stars good, but not worth retail price, January 31, 2006
This review is from: T-Fal Avanti Elite Toaster 4T Model 2 (Kitchen)
I received this toaster for $29.99. For that price I think it is a great toaster, I would not recommend to pay anymore. The toaster works good and is nice to look at, but put together cheaply. I had to do some work on it right out of the box (the crumb trays would not come out). It is a bit slow toasting, but gets the job done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great and is fun to use., September 12, 2004

This toaster makes great toast - golden on the outside and soft on the inside. There are 9 settings, with each setting giving just slightly more color to the toast - so you should be able to find the perfect setting for your preference. The bagel setting for two of the slots is a very nice feature that crisps the cut side well while leaving the other side of the bagel/english muffin warm, but not toasted. When making subsequent rounds of toast (toaster already warm) it knows to reduce the time slightly so each batch of toast doesn't get darker and darker. The separate count-down timer for each side of the toaster lets you know how long you have to wait for your toast - it's a fun feature. It does take up a lot of room on your counter, but is attractive, works well, and is fun to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars OLDER SIBLING Rated, September 10, 2004
This review is from: T-Fal Avanti Elite Toaster 4T Model 2 (Kitchen)
I bought T-Fal's older sibling (white plastic exterior) toaster three years ago to replace a KitchenAid that had put in ten years of hard use and expired. The shape of my T-Fal and the one on this page are the same and the two toasters appear to share a number of features. For toasting regular bread and bagels, it is an excellent toaster. If all you do is white bread, you might as well stop reading here and buy it. The toast comes out just about perfect without much fiddling.

I , however, toast heavy whole grain millet bread and whole grain rice flour breads. These require two toastings in order to reach medium brown. This can take a long time, and the toast can get a bit dry. The bigger problem is that the toast is uneven - one half of it is very dark and the other half very light. If one rotates the bread 180 degrees between the first round and the second, much of this problem is abated. So in a way these two deficiencies partially compensate for each other. Still, I would rather have a toaster that can evenly toast heavy bread evenly in one try.

My guess is that this new, higher powered model will speed things up a bit: I wonder whether it will make the toasting more even.

The breads I toast are also small, so extracting them from the toaster can be problemmatic, even with the little lifting levers. The ones on my toaster seem a little flimsy and easy to jamb.

There is a 'special feature' to this toaster that I had to experience a few times to really appreciate. If the toaster is not plugged in, the toast lifter does not stay in place when depressed. If this happens to you in the morning when you are in a hurry to get to work you might feel frustrated at first because the toaster seems 'broken', but it's not half so bad as waiting ten minutes only to find out you still just have cold bread in the toaster. Just plug it in and it works...

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Bad, December 20, 2004
This review is from: T-Fal Avanti Elite Toaster 4T Model 2 (Kitchen)
I just used this for the first time, and it was miserable. One reason for buying a 4-slice toaster was to speed up the process at breakfast. But this toasts so amazing slow, I was better off using my old 2-slicer. I'm returning it. There has to be better products at this price.
