4.0 out of 5 stars Works pretty well....
I got this deep fryer 2 weeks ago and since then I've made 4 batches of "freedom" fries and one batch of fried chicken - which was actually multiple baskets of 4 breasts and 14 legs. I think its a nice unit and it cooked everything fine - but - the inside of the fryer does NOT come out to clean. The top comes off and, obviously, the basket comes out. But those aren't the...

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay for frying
I have owned two of these units in the past 6 months. The first was purchased and used for around 3 months, cooking twice a week on average. It was never mistreated, and was always cleaned by hand. It simply stopped working one day, and I assumed I had gotten it wet in the wrong spot during a cleaning session. For $40, I was pleased with the food it produced and bought a...

But those aren't the important parts... after making the chicken, the oil was very dirty... so I had to carry the whole unit out and dump the oil... then, because the unit can't be submerged in water, I had to put the fryer in an empty sink and wash out the inside of the fryer with a sponge... a few times. Not a show stopper... but, I think it might be worth getting the T-Fal fryer with the removable drum...

4.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good, February 15, 2004

Recently acquired this fryer after getting burned by a Euro Pro model (the Euro Pro stoped working mid way through it's third batch of food). So far, I've been through three batches of chicken wings with the T Fal fryer with good results. Heating is reasonably fast, the capacity is generous. Very nice to have a sealed lid as well... most of the fryer smell stays put (where it should!) in the fryer.

Things I'd like to improve upon:
Removable bowl for the fryer.

Another indicator to let you know the unit is on. Currently, the only time the light is on is when the unit warms up. After it gets to the set temp, the light goes out.

More robust temperature setting: the slider is fairly loose... could easily get bumped and adjust temp settings without you realizing it.

We'll see how it does over time but am pleased so far.

I have owned two of these units in the past 6 months. The first was purchased and used for around 3 months, cooking twice a week on average. It was never mistreated, and was always cleaned by hand. It simply stopped working one day, and I assumed I had gotten it wet in the wrong spot during a cleaning session. For $40, I was pleased with the food it produced and bought a new one.

The second unit worked for about 6 weeks, and then one day while it was cooking, it started glowing brightly from underneath -- the heating element is controlled by a sliding mechanism and it had quite literally caught on fire at the point of contact. Afterwards, it behaved exactly as the first had when it stopped working, so I have to suspect that may be what happened to the first. From an electrical standpoint, the construction and exposed contacts on the bottom of this unit are not only ridiculously fragile, but potentially dangerous if they should overheat out of site and your cooking area has any flammable materials nearby. That cheap $40 fryer could cost you your home and everything in it.

My next fryer will have an immersion heating element, I simply don't trust having an electric heating element going to 375+ degrees on the bottom of the unit anymore.

4.0 out of 5 stars t-fal deep fryer, October 17, 2005

Nice, easy to clean deep fryer. Nice design, basket holds plentiful amount and cooks food beautifully. My only complaint is the lid snaps open, sending hot steam our to potentially burn operator. Great price for very nice item.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FRYER BUT COULD BE IMPROVED, September 6, 2005

This is a really nice fryer with a large capacity to cook a lot of food at once. It looks good and the basket is nice. The only two drawsbacks are 1.) that the basket does NOT drop low enough into the oil to deep-fry some products as much as we would like and 2.) that you can only remove the lid and basket for cleaning. This makes cleaning out the oil a bit tedious.

However..with that being said~ this is a much better fryer than ones like FryDaddy, etc. and I expect that it will work for a long period of time.

This fryer cooks a lot faster than my old one. It is easy to clean and cool to the touch. The timer feature really helps a lot. The basket is well designed - the oil drains away from the food quickly. I recommend it to everyone!

I JUST WISH THE INSIDE SHAPE OF THE FRYER WAS MORE OBLONG. WHEN I FRY MY RED SNAPPER FISH, THE FISH TAIL IS NOT QUITE SUBMERGED...
