Product Description

Where overdrive and distortion pedals give you that great dirty edge, and reverb and delay pedals create time and space effects, a phase shifter adds a dynamic undulating dimension to your sound. the t-rex phaser gives you everything you need for a dramatic phased sound using two simple controls; rate and depth. this pedal sounds great no matter which setting you choose...from a deep, slow rotation to a light "watery" shimmer

I've never considered returning a pedal before just because I didn't like it, but I may do just that. This is a total piece of junk.

The first sign of trouble was that there was a bunch of remnants of the hot glue used to piece this thing together stuck all over the outside of the pedal when I took it out of the package. No biggie, I thought, it comes right off!

Then I realize that most of this pedal is made of plastic. I'm afraid if I stomp it with more than just the tiniest amount of force it'll crack apart. The button it creaky, crunchy, and cheap feeling.

I turn it over, and realize it's made in China. That was not in the product description, and not typical of T-Rex pedals. The product description needs to do a better job of explaining that this is some entry-level toy not fit for a highschool student with the "T-Rex" stamp on it. It is NOT up to the quality of their regular offerings. Great.

So I plug it in to use it. MY GOD THE VOLUME LOSS. It's easily 40-60% of your volume, GONE the moment you activate the pedal. WTH. So I turn up the amp volume so I can hear it, and the sound quality is terrible no matter where I put the settings, even if I use some of the example settings in the manual.

The adjustment knobs don't smoothly make adjustments to tone. You turn them a bit and nothing happens, turn them a bit more a WHAM there's a HUGE change to tone. It's not linear. The tone adjustments jump around from minor to extreme as you turn the dial.

Then there's total loss of tone quality. Subtleties in attack are lost, changing the pickup switch has almost no effect.

T-Rex is known for their high-quality boutique pedals, so I was curious about the more affordable Tonebug line. When I got the pedal, I was impressed by the build quality: like a little tank. The design is visually pleasing, as is the small footprint. After plugging it in between my guitar and amp, I took a test drive of the settings. It has a toggle switch for Vintage or Modern phasing sounds (both sounded very good, but I prefer the Vintage). Unfortunately, as I was playing through it I noticed that engaging the pedal gave my signal a significant volume drop from the dry signal. I would be cooking along with a nice rhythm groove, kick on the pedal for a solo, and feel like the rug was pulled out from under me. Anticlimactic to say the least. After a bit of this, I dug out my old MXR Phase 100 (probably 30 years old) and tried it instead. The MXR did not seem to have this problem.
T-Rex does make a Tremonti model phaser which features a level control, but it sells for over $250. The search goes on.

I really like this Phaser, it's replacing a Phase 90 on my board, and the t-rex just has a wider range of options available. I didn't experience any volume loss (I think in some cases, the phase effect reduces the "cut" of your instrument, since it's reducing or accentuating certain frequencies as it moves through it's sweep), and it's able to go from a subtle Gilmour-esque sound to an 80s cheeseball solo sound.

I really like this phaser, it has a nice warm, organic sound to it. Mine doesn't have a noticeable volume drop as others have mentioned. There are 2 types of phase to choose from, Modern and Vintage. The vintage sound is why I bought the pedal, primarily trying to get a Floyd-esque phase, and I think it does it well. The modern phase sounds ok, but not really what I was looking for .. obviously depends on the type of music you play. I've had mine for a couple of years and I've had no issues. I think it's a bit overpriced(new), but I bought mine used and it was well worth the money.
