This is a mat made of coconut fibers that you unroll and fasten to the back wall of your terrarium. It is designed for a 10 gallon tank, but it is made slightly larger so you can cut it to size. Stick it on with velcro, and let the crabs have fun climbing it. At least that's the idea. It's a good product, but there are a few things you need to be aware of for your crabs' safety. When I had a 10 gallon tank I bought several of these things and replaced them regularly. Once I upgraded to a larger tank there was plenty of room to put stuff to climb on, so the mat was no longer necessary. I've used many of them over the years, so there must be something I like about them. But they are a huge hassle and can harm your crab. First of all, it only comes with two tiny pieces of velcro. This is not enough. Go to a craft store and get some large heavy duty velcro; don't even use the stuff that comes with this thing. It doesn't stick very well. Second, no matter how much velcro you put on, the crabs will find away to get behind the climbing mat. If the mat is less than two months old, then this is not usually a problem because the crabs can usually get back out on their own. But after about two months the velcro stops sticking so well. Even if you buy good velcro, the crabs will still work it lose after 2 or 3 months. What happens when the velcro comes lose? Crabs climb back there and get stuck to the gluey side. If you're lucky the crab's shell will get stuck and it will be hanging there for you to free. This happened to me two or three times. If you are not lucky the crab's skin will get stuck, it will drop it's shell while trying to escape, and it will die when you're not looking. That happened to me once. FOR THIS REASON YOU MUST REPLACE THE CLIMBING MAT AND VELCRO APPROXIMATELY EVERY 6 WEEKS - NO MORE THAN 8 WEEKS. Otherwise your crabs could get stuck and die. Another reason to replace this mat regularly is because the part of it at the bottom that is buried in the substrate will get wet and dirty and start growing mold. I recommend this product only to someone who meets ALL of the following requirements: 1) Has a 15 gallon or smaller tank. Anything bigger and you can put other climbing things in the tank. 2) Is willing to buy better velcro from a craft store and not use the enclosed velcro. 3) Is willing to replace the climbing mat and velcro every 6-8 weeks. 4) Is willing and able to check on the crabs a couple of times a day to make sure none are stuck. Having said all that - THE HERMIT CRABS ABSOLUTELY LOVE CLIMBING ON THIS THING. There are few things you can put in a terrarium that they enjoy more than this climbing mat - if you can keep them safe. A final good thing: This mat does a wonderful job at increasing the humidity levels in your tank. That's good for the hermies' health.

We bought this for our aquarium and have loved it. The only problem I had was that it needs more velcro then the two little pieces it comes with. Because my hermies are in a 10 gallon aquarium, I wanted to make sure they could still climb. Make sure you have a lid of some sort though; they will climb right out.

This is a good piece to put in your cage but i had to hot glue it to my tank so it would stay!! It needs more STICK, but the crabs love it and it looks natural so other than that i love this product.
