Product Description

T-fal FV4495 Ultraglide Easycord Steam Iron with Ceramic Scratch Resistant Nonstick Soleplate, Black

NEW Black and Silver T-Fal Ultraglide Easy cord 4495 iron embodies ingenuity and innovation for easy ironing and high performance. Thoughtfully designed iron smoothest out wrinkles quickly and easily. Ultraglide ceramic soleplate has the best glide, with incomparable smoothness, scratch-resistance and non-stick properties. Pointed tip works well for getting into pleats, between buttons and along seams. Iron produces continuous steam (up to 35-gram per minute), delivers a powerful burst of steam (100-gram/min) as needed to help smooth out stubborn wrinkles from difficult fabrics. Continuous steam and soleplate temperature are both adjustable to the fabric type. For added convenience, iron comes with extra large sealed inlet opening for easy filling and to prevent spills, large 9-ounce water-tank size means fewer refills necessary; and has a 12 feet extra long cord. Use iron on a flat surface for traditional ironing or hold it upright for vertically steaming out wrinkles from hanging drapes and delicate garments. Easy cord system keeps the cord out of the way when ironing and prevents from re-wrinkling already-ironed fabrics . Dual self-cleaning technology with calc-recollecting valve and integrated anti-scale system provide better long-lasting performances while the anti-drip system prevents water leaks when the iron is not hot enough to steam. Lightweight, the 1725-watt iron endears itself to users with its soft grip handle for ergonomic comfort. Extra-large heel helps to prevent tipping over and is perfect to wrap up the cord when the iron is stored. For peace of mind and added safety, iron comes with a 3-way auto off feature. Iron will shut off automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity if left on its soleplate or tipped over on its side; if left vertically on its heel rest, it will shut off after 8 minutes. Iron measures approximately 5.9 by 11.1-inch and carries a one year limited warranty.

Very good steaming from this iron!
Garni46
Hope it lasts much longer than my other irons, which I've had to replace almost every year.

It has already started leaking water (heavily, like a crack).

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This T-Fal iron is closer to my ideal sewing iron than any of the ones I’ve tried over the past year or two. Pros:

* Unlike many recent iron designs, this iron is well balanced and easy to maneuver.

* The iron is stable/hard to tip over when it is rested on the heel. Which is good, since several of my irons have been damaged over the years by falling off the ironing board.

* The water tank is large and easy to fill. The directions say you can use tap water but I always use distilled, because I don’t like cleaning my irons often.

* The cord stays out of the way while you iron.

* Both the continuous and the shot of steam work at all temperatures, from low/synthetic to high/linen.

* This iron does not leak.

* The sole plate glides easily, but so does the sole plate of most irons, as long as it’s clean.

Cons:

* This iron is still a bit large for pressing small garment areas.

* Even though it is lighter than some irons, it’s still unnecessarily heavy compared to the irons made before enormous ones became trendy.

* The temperature dial is awkwardly positioned directly under the handle, so that you must put the iron down flat to adjust or even see the settings.

* The shutoff time of eight minutes is too short for sewing. By the time I’ve prepared and sewn a seam or two, I have to reheat the iron. Eight minutes is a reasonable shutoff time for just ironing, but I wish manufacturers would consider sewists.

I would be dancing around excitedly about having found a great iron, except the eight-minute shutoff time is a real drawback.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
We had just bought a Panasonic iron, model NI-W810CS, 8 months before getting this TFAL in the Vine program. I'll compare the two in this review, and also comment on the TFAL in regards to its standalone merits.

Short Review: Pointy front edge and large reservoir are pros. The light weight and long cord can be pros or cons depending on your needs, as can the complex and comprehensive de-calcing system. Cons include the need to clean and decalc the iron once per month (at least if you take the instructions seriously) and the idiotic "pictorial only" manual, which will leave you confused and squinty-eyed. Biggest liability is the entirely too vigorous steam system, which often sprays water out, drips from the front plate holes, and often makes the iron sound like Thomas the Tank Engine. The Panasonic competitor is generally more successful across the board and though it costs more, the difference in price is not enough to favor the TFAL in my opinion.

Full Details:

Iron Shape -- TFAL has point front, Pana is more or less symmetrical in shape, so the front is about as pointy as the rear of the face plate. This makes it easier to use TFAL to iron nooks and crannies in clothing, but makes it easier to reverse directions quickly with the Pana. All in all, I found the more traditional TFAL shape to be more useful.

Water Capacity -- TFAL is larger in capacity (9 oz vs 6.75 oz) and is much easier to fill, as the port is larger and can even be put directly under a tap faucet. The Pana is more old school, with a tiny port, complete with a flimsy cover that is just waiting to break off at the first mishap. Clear win for TFAL here.

Weight -- To get wrinkles out, pressure has to come from somwhere. Pana is heavier, TFAL lighter.

Our current iron is a Black & Decker D2030 Auto-Off Digital Advantage Iron which has served us well over the last number of years. We've also had a Black & Decker D6000 All-Temp Steam Iron with Stainless-Steel Soleplate which was not a favorite of ours. I've reviewed both of those other irons and will provide the links at the end of my review.

The T-fal FV4495 is a nice iron in several regards:
➺ It has a super long cord length - 12 feet
➺ It has a really nice easy glide base plate
➺ Lots of holes in the base plate let out lots of steam
➺ Auto-shutoff after 8 minutes of standing on heel or after 30 seconds of being flat down or tipped over without movement.
➺ It is fairly light in weight and easy to handle
➺ Nice solid and wide heel for stability
➺ Gets to temperature quickly

The T-fal uses 1725 watts of electricity which produces great heat quickly. The B&D D2030 uses 1500 watts which is still respectable but the T-fal is a bit faster getting to temperature.

The steam generation is excellent in my opinion.

The burst of steam works well as does the water spray. Both of these functions are controlled by two large, easy to hit buttons on the top of the handle. Also on the handle light that indicates power is on or that the iron is in standby (no heat and the light is blinking rapidly.)

The temperature dial is in the middle of the iron above the water reservoir.
