This easy to read book not only makes a good instructional guide to finding a suitable martial arts school but gives a detailed personal account of increased self confidence and growth as shown through "Joey" and the other characters. Parents and gaurdians can greatly benefit from this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Instilling Self Confindence gives families the opportunity, May 23, 2005
This review is from: TAE KWON DO MAN ON BUILDING SELF CONFIDENCE (Paperback)
Master Rory Kyle has done a wonderful job in appealing to multiple audiences the benefits that instilling self confidence into others not only benefits the individual but the rest of the community.

This book chronicles the journey that one shy young man takes as he moves from the ages of 12 to 18. As the main character Joey moves through these years, his development into a man of character is defined by his participation in Tae Kwon Do. Mater Kyle shows how each small accomplishment leads to the next and how each contributes toward a larger goal (in this case the desire to get a black belt).

What most do not understand, and is also true with the main character at the beginning, is how these small successes also shape each individual into a mature confident person who is able to confidently make live their lives making decisions with purpose instead of fear.

I believe that this book can be used as tool to not only showcase the benefits of the martial arts but as a way to approach life.

A beneficial read for teens, parents, teachers and martial arts instructors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tae Kwon Do Man - great book for kids and adults alike, May 6, 2005
This review is from: TAE KWON DO MAN ON BUILDING SELF CONFIDENCE (Paperback)
Tae Kwon Do Man takes an extraodinary look at some of life's high's and low's and is clearly written to inspire those children - and adults - that lack self-confidence, self-esteem and other skills important to becoming successful in life.

I encourage all parents who would like their children seek improvement in the life skills to get this book and read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tae Kwon Man, September 4, 2005
This review is from: TAE KWON DO MAN ON BUILDING SELF CONFIDENCE (Paperback)
If you are looking for an alternative to classical ballet lessons, Tae Kwon Do is an excellent choice to improve self-confidence, flexibility, balance and muscle tone.

Through the story of young Joey, one is treated with a realistic portrayal of what one can expect when considering and attending Tae Kwon Do classes. From the process of searching for a compatible teacher and the first day of class to Joey's earning of his black belt, the details given are typical of a martial arts student. This is invaluable to those thinking about joining a martial arts class, either for one's children or for oneself.

As Joey meets the challenges of adolescent social and academic trials, his experiences in learning to discipline his body and mind during Tae Kwon Do classes enable him to visualize and incorporate non-violent options to these trials. Successes in putting these options in to practice increase his self-confidence and encourage him to try new activities.

This tale is a great look inside the martial arts classroom and how it can increase self-confidence.

This book is a must read for every parent and grandparent. My grandson took Tae Kwondo early in life and we see the change in him today, so I agree with the benefits. The book was a easy read...I got into the main character and as a parent could relate to his parents...it was good story line that I had to finish ...I read the book in one day...certainly "Made for TV" the type of short story that I would not mind my children watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all pre-teens By Chuck Ross, February 22, 2009

Tae Kwon Do Man
Review by Chuck Ross
Rory Kyle talks to us about a subject he has lived and has brought forward in a compelling story of two young boys that become men and the values of their passage by way of the Martial Arts.

This is a comfortable interlude into family life in middle class America, that touches on the concerns of thoughtful parents and the friendship of two boys that brandish humor, guile and tenacity. Joey and Alex display traits of people we want our children to be like and how that can be achieved. Tae Kwon Do Man is written for the adolescent but should be considered a primer for parents raising pre-teens. The intrigue of self reliance and soul recognition becomes paramount to shy Joey's development. Alex's natural athletic talent lends to the sometimes grueling pace which in turn culminates in their self actualization.
There are heroes thru-out this book that are respected for their daily strength to endure and not take life for granted. Young people today as always need to experience examples of altruistic confidence. Tae Kwon Do Man is a perfect vehicle for them. I would recommend this book find its way to be required reading for all 5th grade classes.

Rory Kyle is a 5th degree black belt Tae Kwon Do Master. He ran his own Martial Arts school in TX. for over 15 years and promoted over 100 students to the level of Black Belt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Story, August 3, 2006
This review is from: TAE KWON DO MAN ON BUILDING SELF CONFIDENCE (Paperback)
I found this to be an inspiring story and one that dispelled a lot of myths about martial arts.

It is very easy to read and to associate with the main character, "Joey". Everyone has feelings of low self esteem some time in their life. This story shows how one very shy boy, along with the help of caring family and friends, overcomes his self doubt and finds it within himself to achieve his goal. He becomes a confident and self assured young man through the lessons he learned from Tae Kwon Do.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone in the same situation, or anyone curious about learning more about martial arts and the positive effects it can have on your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A guide to parenting, August 3, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: TAE KWON DO MAN ON BUILDING SELF CONFIDENCE (Paperback)
I first met Rory Kyle in 1976 at Valparaiso University and since I have not met a more disciplined or compassionate person. Rory as a young man was extremely confident and sure of himself. He left school, entered a prestigious accounting firm and had a stellar career there. A few years later he left to devote himself to his discipline. Tae Kwon Do.

Rory has the ability to master anything that he focuses on, his latest effort in writing this book is no exception. Bringing to the market a fictional story (perhaps loosely related to his personnel experiences?) is no exception. Rory brings to these pages the anxiety of parents who want their child to be happier, the confusion of childhood, as well as the pleasure of finding something to which you belong, and in time become part of.

Reading this book as a novel is a mistake, this is more of a life reference as to how to approach challenges and in turn conquer. If you are a parent with concerns your child that may be a bit awkward or shy, and you need a place to turn, this book will help you direct your childs energies, whether towards Tae Kwon Do or other programs, and become part of something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, Informative for Youth and Parents, April 26, 2006
By
This review is from: TAE KWON DO MAN ON BUILDING SELF CONFIDENCE (Paperback)
I found Tae Kwon Do Man to be inspiring and very challenging, especially for young and old having low self esteem or just not much self confidence. Master Rory writes an easy to understand story of how the mind and body work together to develop a whole person. Master Rory shows that Joey's parents, instructor, best friend and girlfriend are all part of his life long maturation process. As a retired teacher and coach, I can think of several students that would have benefited from reading about Joey's life experiences. I have never taken Tae Kwon Do, but see its merits and benefits from this book. I highly recommend this book to adolescents and parents alike.
