Somebody Needs To Make The Movie,
By Brian Schiff "jaywilton" (Detroit Mi. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: TAKE the A TRAIN (Mass Market Paperback)
The late, great Michael Blankfort was sorta a household name;he was involved with award-winning films like 'Broken Arrow' and 'The Caine Mutiny' and wrote several novels. So far,moviewise-somebody's blown it on 'Take The A
Train';I first stumbled onto it twenty-some years ago-and bumbled onto it again recently. It didn't just "hold up";the story which takes place in post-World War II New York, centers on a black hustler named Franklin Gilboa and his wanna be succesor-"Doc" Henshel-a Jewish kid from Long Island, who wished he were from Harlem. Then there's Vincy Garland or DeHaviland or..., the prostitute, who Franklin sets Doc up with for his first time-and of course,Doc's neurotic Jewish family;this is a knockout coming of age novel for all ages. |
