Book Description

Winner of the 2012 Global Ebook Award for "Best Speculative Fiction – Contemporary Fantasy (set after 1940)"

There's a new kind of vampire in the City of Angels.

Los Angeles Police Detective Kel Langston finds that out the hard way when he survives a brutal attack in a dark alley only to realize he's been turned into a monster. Stuck halfway between the living and the dead, his existence becomes a nightmare war for control between his human side and the burning hunger that gnaws at him, urging him to do things no human should ever want to do.

And as if that isn't enough, Kel finds himself forced into hunting the creatures that did this to him, a new kind of vampire humans don’t even know exist...a kind of vampire known only as Takers. Something he hates…and can't resist…and doesn’t know how to kill.

Takers… Your blood is only the beginning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Twist on Vampires, A Worthwhile read! September 30, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was a pleasant surprise, holding my attention for hours until I finished it. It is told from the point of view of the main character, Kel, a newly turned "half-turn." He is a rare form of half-changed taker, a type of vampire that takes souls as well as blood. Kel is a detective who is dedicated to his work, finding killers and bringing them to justice. As a "half-turn" he must kill to survive. The story takes the reader on a journey as he learns to deal with his physical changes while battling with his own morality. Kel grows as a person as he embraces his new life and takes other new half-turns under his protective wing. By the end of the book Kel is deeply entrenched in attempting to solve several murder cases. He is challenged by the mystery of why new half-turns are being created, a mystery which somehow ties into the murder cases he is trying to solve. This is the first of a series. The second book, "Takers II, Family" is currently available and takes the reader further into the mystery. I can't wait for the next book!TAKERS

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest Review! Don't laugh! October 4, 2012

Alright. Deep down, beyond the writing and consulting, I'm just a regular guy, but when I was asked to review this book I felt like I would need to join a bunch of college girls in a book club. I rarely read fiction, and never do vampire anything! But upon delving into the book I forgot I was supposed to be reviewing and just started enjoying it. It was not only good enough to finish, but good enough to refer to my daughter. I also suggested she tell all her friends. (I'm afraid to tell all mine). But seriously, this is a really good read. It'll keep you up for sure... turning the pages... wondering if you should ignore the "experts" and wear some garlic around your neck. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Vampire Fantasy Meets Noir Detective Novel October 3, 2012

Takers is a fun read for anyone who is into vampire fantasy. Fans of True Blood or Blade will find this contemporary take on vampire lore familiar and entertaining. The noir detective feel gives it a bit more depth than the typical vampire story. There are some scenes of relatively tame "vamp-erotica", including some homosexual themes, that would place this in what I would call a "PG-13" range of suitability, so prospective readers should be aware of that. There were some minor inconsistencies in the story that I felt took away from it slightly, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, but overall it was an enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taken by Takers May 26, 2013
The whole vampire thing has been pretty much done to death in recent years, so it's refreshing to come upon Takers, something of a different 'take' on the genre. A very dark urban fantasy, gutsy, bloody as one would expect, fast-paced and slick, it spins the tale of a hard-assed LA cop 'turned' into something half-human half-vampire, and all that that entails. The first person narrative draws you quickly into the penumbral world of the newly-turned detective and his encounters in and outside of the world he has been sucked into, its dilemmas, morals and questionable joys. This is the highly enjoyable first volume of what looks to be a multi-part series, and if blood, fangs and nasty doings are your thing, you're in for a bit of a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars What an Imagination February 22, 2013

I was blown away by Ms. Davis imagination with the strange but highly curious world of the TAKERS. The narrations is off the charts and kept my attention from the beginning to the Cliff Hanger ending! DIRTY!!!!! But I loved every moment. Will be going to the next book soon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Adrenaline and testosterone fueled. October 17, 2012

It isn't so much the vampires that do it for me here, as it is the constant motion of the plot. The way the story is written, reminds me of the kind of action movies where the story pins you to your seat and never lets you up until it's over and you're given permission to leave. As far as the vampire hierarchy of the characters in the book, their powers and how a new vamp learns how to deal with their new evolution, there's enough here to leave me satisfied that some thought went into the book beyond throwing a few words about fangs on a page. Again, I'd have to say though, that the strongest impression I have from this book is the way voice of the narrator sets an unrelenting pace to the point that I was left with the feeling that I just got off of a very fast, very fun, roller coaster.
