4.0 out of 5 stars Anthology of SF/Fantasy/Horror stories, September 16, 2011
By
This review is from: TALES OF SCIENCE AND SORCERY: Master of the Asteroid; The Seed from the Sepulcher; The Root of Ampoi; The Immortals of Mercury; Murder in the Fourth Dimension; Seedling of Mars; The Maker of Gargoyles; The Great God Awto; Mother of Toads; The Tomb Spawn (Paperback)
This is one of a number of collections SF/Fantasy short stories by Clark Ashton Smith, of whom no less an authority than H.P. Lovecroft wrote "None strikes the note of cosmic horror so well." It was first published in 1964.

Clark Ashton Smith's writing drew no clear distinction between SF and fantasy. The style of several of his pieces reminded me of Karl Edward Wagner's "Kane" books such as "Dark Crusade."

This book contains a memoir of Clark Ashton Smith written by E Hoffman Price and the following fourteen stories:

1) Master of the Asteroid
2) The Seed from the Seoulcher
3) The Root of Ampoi
4) The Immortals of Mercury
5) Murder in the Fourth Dimension
6) Seedling of Mars
7) The Maker of Gargoyles
8) The Great God Awtob
9) Mother of Toads
10) The Tomb-spawn
11) Schizoid Creator
12) Symposiom of the Gorgon
13) The Theft of 39 girdles
14) Morthylla

If you like your SF/Fantasy to be psychedelic and strange, you will probably regard this collection as an absolute gem.

If you prefer your visions of other worlds to be hard SF, of a more realistic and plausible character, do not touch this with the proverbial barge-pole.

If you do appreciate this, two other collections by the same author which you are likely to also enjoy are

"Lost Worlds: Zothique, Averoigne and others Volume 1" and

"Lost Worlds volume 2."
