2.0 out of 5 stars Works but not very well.
This unit is what I would classify as just above a toy. The sounds are OK for a beginner but for any seasoned professional there will be some disappointment. I was very fustrated when I tried to play CD's that I burned myself. Only after looking in the manual did I find out that it doesn't support CD-R/W and some CD-R type CDs. Oh well, needless to say I returned it. I've...

Tascam has built in this everything needed for guitar enthusiasts who want to break down note by note to aquire otherwise hard to find notes as well as finger picking style. Now with this device one can quickly advance to playing such classic rock stars like steve howe from the group yes. I am not a sheet music reader but have a very good ear and yet could not keep up with such accomplished masterpieces such as the "clap" until now.Try finding any tabs online to play the "clap"! NONE nodda! and now with this instrument, i can slow down and not only find the right notes but feel his finger style as well. This will make it easier for you to figure out tough songs period. Make sure you opt for a 9 volt adapter as this eats up regular batteries, rechargables batteries recommended. I highly recommend this for advanced musician

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful, July 13, 2007

This is a useful tool. I haven't explored too many of its features, but the ability to easily isolate a section of music and play it over and over at reduced speed (without changing the pitch, although you can do that too) is great for helping learn parts. It does a good clean guitar amplification as well; I haven't fiddled with the effects much.

My only complaint is that the manufacturing quality could be a bit higher. I'm not convinced it's made to last. Also, I've had some problem with cds skipping or repeating (when I haven't set it to do that). Just re-inserting the cd fixes that, but it shouldn't happen in the first place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guitar Trainer, May 7, 2007

I bought the Tascam CD-Gt1mkII portable cd guitar trainer for my son (age is 17). I've found that he loves the trainer and uses it over and over to learn the lead guitar parts of favorite guitarists such as Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, and even Joe Satriani. The slower-downer feature allows him to hear the parts of interest with minimal distortion. I would suggest getting the battery eliminator since you will find someone using up all the batteries in the house as they use this device for hours on end. Highly recommended.

Love the features. Watch out for the cd lid. It breaks easily. Make sure yours comes with the ac/dc plug. You may be using it a while!

4.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had this years ago!, January 10, 2009

Wow! What a great product. I purchased one the other month for $35, plus $11 for shipping. I couldn't be happier. At first I thought the ability to slow songs down without changing the pitch was going to be the biggest aid in figuring out guitar parts. But I found that the loop option is what really helps! You can pick out a section of music, hit the loop button once to start, and a second time to stop it, and then the Tascam CD1-MKII will continously loop that segment infanitley (or until the batteries run out).

There are a few cons though. First off, a few people have complained about the construction. I have no idea what they're talking about... except for the CD lid, which opens slightly and feels like it could easily break off (like what happened to my Tascam four-track). The other con is variable. CDs respond differently. Some CDs can be slowed down to fifty percent just fine. Other CDs will sound choppy past 32%. This doesn't really bother me too much, because I break songs down and loop them at 32%, which is PLENTY slow, and master that section before I move on. Still, there is some room for improvement.

The only thing that could make me happier with this product were if the CD lid was made sturdier.

He loved it! Very useful tool for learning solos, etc. Musician's Friend was prompt in shipping my order and didn't nail me with excess shipping charges.
