I wanted more for this blend---a disappointment!, July 19, 2008
***
Tazo's Awake Black Tea tastes like an ordinary black tea, maybe a little stronger than usual. If you let it brew even a little too long, it becomes bitter. Otherwise, it is fine.
The only ingredient in Awake is black tea---a blend of "black teas". Tazo does not tell you which ones. It is, of course, caffeinated.
Tazo is an interesting company that makes only super premium teas. They are socially responsible, based in Portland, and have the motto, "The Reincarnation of Tea". Tazo is owned by Starbucks. Their web site is fun and quirky, with a Zen-type focus, definitely worth checking out. It is unclear, though, from their web site, how many of their ingredients are organic or kosher, and they do use some "natural flavors" in their teas--this wording seems a little vague for a super premium tea.
On the package, Tazo writes, "a bold breakfast tea of depth and character, invigorating anytime. This eye-opening black tea blend has a full, rich character with hints of dark caramel, malt and black cherries." Well, I'm very disappointed, because I don't taste any of this. Just plain old black tea, and a little on the bitter side at that. On their web site, Tazo describes the flavor profile of Awake as "malty, full of dense, dark cherries". Tazo describes the aroma as "burnt caramel, brown sugar"---whoa! I definitely did not taste this, not at all. Again, just very ordinary black tea.
If you do like this tea, the bulk packaging makes it much more affordable.

Great taste when cold brewed!, April 26, 2009
I have been drinking this tea for months now along with the Tazo Zen green tea. I love both flavors and have found that they make a wonderful iced tea (the only way I like to drink tea). I have found that if you cold brew this tea and the Zen green tea, they do have the flavor undertones that the box states. It almost seems to have a "solidness" to the flavor that seems to fit the breakfast concept well. I definitely recommend it if you like a nice smooth flavor to your black tea. I use the Starbucks Classic syrup in this tea and the flavor is perfect together (you can buy classic syrup in a bottle from almost any Starbucks location).
Just as a side for those who are interested. Cold brewing just means that you place the tea bags in the fridge in water and let it set, usually at least 3 hours. It's that simple! It maintains the full subtle flavor of the tea much better and is almost impossible to turn bitter or mess it up unless you use too many tea bags. This only works if you plan to have iced tea of course. I use 4 "Awake" tea bags in 2 quarts of water and let it set overnight. I don't remove the tea bags until I have drank all the tea. It's delicious and super easy. I would recommend trying it to anyone who likes iced tea!

Good Tea but like Bromley Estate Tea better!, December 2, 2008
This tea is OK. I like Bromley's Estate Tea much better and it is significantly cheaper. I like really strong black tea and to me Bromley is stronger and a 100 bag box is $4 in my supermarket. I was hoping for the $$$ this tea would be better - but I'm going back to Bromley!
