Book Description

9058093417 978-9058093417 January 15, 2000 1

This practical guide describes the stage-by-stage development of a method for predicting the penetration rate (PR) and the advance rate (AR) for tunnel boring machines based on an expanded version of the Q-value, QTBM. The author analyzes 145 TBM tunnels that total 1,000km in length. He then develops simple formulae to estimate PR and AR from the QTBM value and to back-calculate QTBM from performance data. The book quantitatively explains actual advance rates as high as five m/hr for one day or as low as 0.005 m/hr for several months. It also covers logging methods, empirical TBM tunnel support design, and numerical verification of support.

4.0 out of 5 stars Development of TBM prognosis method that works, December 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: TBM Tunnelling in Jointed and Faulted Rock (Hardcover)
This slim volume first analyses factors affecting tunneling speeds as expressed by penetration rate PR, and actual advance rate AR. A 1000 km and 145 case record analysis shows how TBM advance rate gradually declines, whether breaking world records like 16 km in one year, or when stuck in a fault zone without pre-treatment for weeks or months or worse. TBM are remarkable machines, but classification of the ground to be penetrated, and especially the machine-rock interaction is all important. This volume records the development of a TBM performance prognosis method, now facilitated by a graphic performance model called Qtbm, using the mostly simple formulae developed.
