I owned the TC Helicon Create XT and the TC Helicon Harmony G XT. I really wanted reverbs and delay's and harmonies for live use. In my album recordings [...] I use a lot of harmonies and sometimes effects. My live performances sounded hollow compared to the recordings. Well the Create XT was way to noticeable when I changed effects and the Harmony G XT's harmonies sounded way to artificial. Then I saw this. The Voicelive Play which is ultimately both pedals rolled into one but a little cheaper and you get a lot more presets. Because both my Create XT and Harmony G XT was recently ordered from Amazon they were cool enough to let me ship both back and get this. I was extremely happy when I started playing with this. 1st off it's way more realistic and natural sounding then the other two pedals. You have 200 presets you can save. What makes this pedal for me though is the HIT button. HIT activates a few more layered effects within the preset to really emphasize a point in the song. For example I keep the reverb on and slight delay at all times but I have harmonies and doubler set to activate only when I press the HIT pedal. So my verses sound full with reverb and delay and on chorus' I kick in the HIT effects. Whats so cool about it is the effects sound fuller and you can notice, whoa theres harmonies!!!!! But it doesn't change the sound or volume of the effect. It's a very smooth transition which is HUGE for live application. Also the room mics pick up the key of the songs and the harmonies will follow that key. I haven't really tried that cuz I don't trust it....but I can go in and set the key of the song manually and save it for that preset. So presets 1-14 are the songs we play live so I have them all saved in what key they are in and what HIT effects I want to use.Read more ›

Overall I'm very happy with the device. It is solidly built and extremely easy to use and program. The controls are logically laid out and it's got all the inputs and outputs that I need.

I do have some things I don't like. Primarily that there isn't very fine grained control - especially over the core tone. It's designed to be "easy" to use, so all of the settings are very basic/shallow and rely on the presets.

The overall sound quality is great, and like with most things, the effects sound good when used in moderation. Many of the harmony and other effects tend to "sound" like effects when it's just you in a room singing - there is a "digital" sound that's obvious you're voice is being processed.

For some of the effects this makes sense because they are supposed to be extreme (T-Pain style auto-tune, alien and robot voices) but for others it's distracting. When playing with a full band this isn't as noticeable since the natural reverb of a room or club masks it. Because of this, it would only be useful in a live environment, not in the studio which makes sense having the word "Live" in it's name and all :)

More about limitations:
According to the manual, you can set tone on each patch/preset as an "effect", but there is no such configuration page in the settings (the manual says there are eight effects, but there are actually only seven - the missing one being Tone). I updated the firmware to the latest version, but it's still not there. For overall tone you don't have any kind of EQ, gate, or compression settings - just a handful of presets, which is disappointing.

The advertising leads you to believe that the ambient mics will pick up the sound from the stage and atomatically set the key for harmony and auto tune effects.

I had been waiting for this to be available since reading reviews earlier in the year. This is really a great price for what has turned out to be an extremely good quality, easy to use, effects for singers. My daughter loves to sing and this thing not only helps with feedback on how well she can hit and hold the right note, she can sing along with her ipod and add an incredible number of effects like harmonies and so forth. I ran this through my higher end sound systems and the quality is top notch. I look forward to integrating this into my DJ show. I highly recommend.

This vocal pedal just blows my mind and I cannot believe the cheap price of this piece of electronic wizardry.

I was looking for something to spice up my vocals for live acoustic shows but with the voicelive play, I sound absolutely HUGE and the vocals sparkle.

When we played "Africa" by Toto and kicked into the chorus, the crowd went nuts. I used a voice doubler with a 3 part harmony and it sounded like Steve Lukather and Joe Williams were singing backup!!!

When the harmonies kick in, it sends a shiver down my spine at how wide and sonically pristine it sounds.

You have the ability to control almost every parameter and assign harmonies, reverb, delays, doubling, etc to the "hit" switch to toggle between verses and choruses.

I love the switches TC helicon uses, they are dead silent and precise. There is NO noise whatsoever during switching.

Those people who say it sounds "digital" never bothered to create their own sound, they just ran through the presets and have no clue. I seriously doubt any of these people could tell the difference between a signal chain through a analog mic pre vs digital.

It sounds great with a SM58.

I do not use room sense, instead I plug my guitar aux out into the voicelive play's aux in so my guitar controls the harmonies. It takes good rhythm and some tweaking of chords to get the right harmonies though. You may find you will have to change some suspended chords like Dsus2 to a D major to get the right notes but overall, that's not a big deal.

The only negative is that there is no multi-band equalizer so you will have to choose between preset "tones".
