Product Description

The VoiceLive 2 floor-based vocal processor from TC Helicon makes it easier to lead your own vocal backup group while sounding rich and authentically human at the same time. It starts with a guitar, MIDI keyboard, or aux-input controlled vocal harmony algorithm with four intervals, each of which can be unison-doubled, or 8 discrete voices controlled by your MIDI keyboard playing. And when you want to tap into your gospel soul, VoiceLive 2 effects pedal gives singers a Choir algorithm that creates the massive multi-voice group vocal sound to bring home those classic choruses.Vocal effects pedal with more automatic featuresWhen you're worrying about parameter settings, you spend less time focusing on your music. So when TC Helicon set out to build VoiceLive 2, they automated several of its features. Auto Mic-Gain Set the mic gain from a standing position just by singing. Once this is done there are no knobs to be jostled in transit and you can still do manual tweaks if you feel you'd like to.Auto Gate-Feedback a problem? An all-new Auto Gate listens to you and adjusts to reduce feedback and effects leak-through while you're not singing.Adaptive Tone-A single push of the Tone button engages studio-quality Shape EQ, compression, and de-essing that adapts to the tonal range of your singing style and voice for increased impact and smoothed dynamics. Finally, your live singing can have that studio polish.Reverb and Delay-ducking Increase the sustaining tail of your reverb and delay effects while carving out plenty of room for your lyrics with ducking. The level of the effects is reduced while you sing and then subtly increases after your last syllable for a paradoxical deeper ambience with enhanced intelligibility. Of course, this is all automatic-just select a ducking reverb or delay style, and VoiceLive 2 does the rest.A vocal effects powerhouseAll the processing power in VoiceLive 2 is available simultaneously to take your voice, your performances, and your music over t

More automatic features

When you’re worrying about parameter settings, you spend less time focusing on your music so we’ve automated several of VoiceLive 2’s features.

    * Auto Mic Gain – now you can set the mic gain from a standing position just by singing. Once this is done there are no knobs to be jostled in transit and you can still do manual tweaks if you want to.
    * Auto Gate – Feedback a problem? An all new Auto Gate listens to you and adjusts to reduce feedback and effects leak-through while you’re not singing.
    * Adaptive Tone – A single push of the Tone button engages studio quality Shape EQ, compression and de-essing that adapts to the tonal range of your singing style and voice for increased impact and smoothed dynamics. Finally your live singing can have that studio polish.
    * Reverb and Delay ducking – Increase the sustaining tail of your reverb and delay effects while carving out plenty of room for your lyrics with ducking. The level of the effects is reduced while you sing and then subtly increases after your last syllable for a paradoxical deeper ambience with enhanced intelligibility. Of course, this is all automatic – just select a ducking reverb or delay style, VoiceLive 2 does the rest.

A vocal effects powerhouse
OK we’ve put all our cards on the table here. Now that we have the processing power we’ve just put everything we have in VoiceLive 2. It’s all available simultaneously to take your voice, your performances and your music over the top. In addition to vocal harmony, you can construct or select preset effect chains containing effects to:

    * Distort your voice – Grunge is good. Make a statement with the Transducer block that also has 4 pole filters for great megaphone and telephone effects.
    * Clone your voice – employ up to 4 voices of humanized unison overdubs in addition to the 8 harmony voices. This sound has been used since recording began to fatten vocals, now it’s your turn.
    * Expand your space – A completely new reverb algorithm envelops your voice in dense ambiences from teeny live rooms to concert halls and bright plate simulations. Don’t forget the delay block can serve to add depth or become a highlight effect whether it’s using tap tempo or tape delay styles.
    * Mod ya later – The full µMod block brings lush chorus, slick microtuning, swooshing flange and more to the party. Those half time bridge sections never sounded more psychedelic.

Random access
Having a large chain of effects won’t do as much good if you can’t add and remove links in the chain when the mood strikes. The individual stompbox footswitches for Harmony, Doubling, µMod, Reverb, Delay and FX give you the flexibility to layer or simplify at will. Also, there’s a Shortcut footswitch that be assigned to add other interesting features such as tap tempo, harmony hold and others. There is no separation between Song mode and Preset mode as there was in the classic VoiceLive; each preset can have up to 50 steps each of which can contain a different preset or a simple modification of the main preset. Go ahead, get dirty and start creating now.

Let's begin by saying that I own two harmonizers of TC Helicon's biggest competitor (version 4 of said harmonizer, and version 5). I think both companies offer products that are mutually beneficial in a studio or live situation, if you invest in both. I'll explain below.

For this review, I will say that I mainly use the unit in a studio situation, writing songs/vocals and experimenting with harmonies... and often, I'll record the harmonies, because to my ears, they sound wonderful, and realistic, even dry as a bone (no reverb, etc). I haven't used the unit live, but I'm sure it will be awesome. The only thing is, you have to go into your Setup menu and make sure the output gain is set correctly, and make sure the mic gain is right.. blah blah blah.

That said, let's give some simple pros and cons, and then we'll go into detail.

-------------------------

PROs:
- Ridiculously configurable. This cannot be understated. The Voicelive 2 is RIDICULOUSLY configurable.
- relatively easy to get going right away (start with preset #2 - Close Up 3rd)
- the menu and knobs that navigate it are pretty quick and easy to use... just remember the big knob controls the "up/down" in the menu, and the four knobs below the screen control each column and the parameters in that selected row, as needed.
- There are good "video" manuals by the company (on their own site, plus a popular video site). These are great "getting going right away" videos.
- The harmonies sound great, and very realistic. More on this below.
- the "Tone" button... it is tweakable (unlike on TC's other products), which is awesome... and it really does make your vocal sound a million times better than without.

I would have paid half of the price tag just for the standard effects and tone processing. The reverbs, delays, and tone controls are sweet. Without even touching the harmonies, this unit will make you sound better.

The tuner for the guitar automatically bypasses the effects to give you a dry sound when you speak and it silences the guitar while you tune. The guitar effects sound really nice too. The equalization and reverb sound really good and you can configure them for the guitar independent of the vocals. I would like to have the option to have different guitar effects with different vocal programs. The guitar effects are a global change. If you want to bypass the guitar effects completely, you can do so by using the output to your amp or directly to the PA.

Now for the harmonies.... it's got everything. You can sound like a Gregorian chant with a room full of monks, to the Cher-like auto/hard tuning radio stuff and there are also some crazy alien-like options. Most will probably find some of the pre-set programs perfect for use out of the box, but you can modify to your heart's delight and store your version of the program in sequence.

I also like the Step function that allows you to step through several programs in a song mode. Expect to spend lots of time working on customizing this unit. In the end, you'll be extremely happy with this purchase. The harmonies sound realistic and you can customize their volume in the mix to make it sound even more authentic.

Only thing I didn't like was the fact that the harmony button has a dual function. If you tap it, it turns on the harmony. Anything longer than a tap (if you step and release) will result in the unit switching to "Set Key" and puts the harmony in a static key.

I've been a musician for over 50 years and have never seen or heard anything like this unit from TC-Helicon. While researching other items, I stumbled onto Laura Clapp, Product Specialist for TC-Helicon, demonstrating this VoiceLive 2 unit on YouTube. Tom Lang is equally as talented in showing what it can do. "Impressive" is my understatement of the year. I had to watch several times to believe what I was hearing! Preferring solo now (after dealing with too many 'creative' personalities in the past) I bought one on the spot.

PRO:

* Does exactly what it says
* Harmony voices sound better than advertised
* "Choir" feature is an auditory roller coaster ride...astounding!
* Able to adjust level of harmony voices up or down to match your taste for how 'present' the backup voices should be in relation to yours
* Significant number of presets (205) for just about every musical genre there is
* One can add as many presets as desired to the primary item selected, then "step" thru them, or play them all at once
* Manual tweeks are available, with a large number of effects available as well
* Customer Service response to YouTube comments was very good

CON:

* 'Quick Start' booklet too light on instruction.
* Booklet statement to "audition all 205 presets" did not initially sit well with me, as I prefer something in writing to act as a guide. I was unaware the included CD had an actual
printout of the presets until, in frustration, I loaded it onto my PC and after running thru all the links found the preset list and printed it out. I had assumed the CD was something for
PC application and wasn't aware it contained that information.
