I bought this last Christmas for my daughters room. The picture is really clear and crisp. It looks very much like a Samsung and as it turns out the panel is made by Samsung. That explains the good picutre I guess. DirectTv doesn't have the remote code for this TV yet but one can't be too picky with a good price like this. So.. 10 months of steady use and no problems at all. If I buy another TV I'll definitely take a close look at TCL while shopping for sure.

The arrived on time thank you amazon. First off this new model addresses alot of the problems from the previous model. The tv remote is more pretty than the old model an for those who wants to program their cable remotes the code is I think either 160 or 161. The colors and crisp and rich. This review is based on the 40 inch new model.

I am watching it as I type
When I received it, thought I would get smart and open the box from the bottom, and just slide the box up. The packer was smarter, and put the tv in upside down...lol.
I am not mechanical at all, and living alone, I had a problem with the 4 screws to put the base on. Tried to set it face down, like the book suggested, that didn't work, so gently put the tv upside down on the couch and braced it well. Had a problem as the screws went in really tight, so I sprayed Pam on them. (I didn't have WD40). That did the trick.
Now, for the setup...kept in the old cords plugged in the Satellite box, and plugged them in the tv. The tv came right on, but no signal. Read the manual, and checked the box that said HDMI, that didn't work, either. I forgot how it came up, but another list came on the screen, no HDMI was checked, so I put in a check again. Wa-LA....my tv program came up.
Held my breath, and tried the DirecTV Remote. I was mentally armed this time, as I had read the first review that had the codes in it.
I didn't have to do a thing, the saved programs came up, and te DirecTV guide.
The picture is nice and sharp. Well worth the money I paid for it.

TV itself is fine but if you turn off both the cable box and TV and restart both the TV goes through its 3-4 minute recognition cycle. No hitting "OK" or other buttons hurries it up. If you turn off TV and leave the box on all's well. When you turn on TV again it starts up normally. Never had any TV do this before...but then again this is the first one at this price I've ever purchased.

We needed a new table-top TV for our bedroom and were looking for something in the 26" range with a good picture and sound that could project outward. After searching around and reading reviews on various brands and models, we decided to give this TCL set a try. Unfortunately the first TCL TV that we received went dead, right after the cable programming sequence. I contacted Amazon right away and they shipped out another new TCL TV and we received it the next day! This was amazing customer service. The 2nd TCL set was very easy to set up - yes, the reviews are right on about the screws that hold the base together - just be careful screwing them in. And use a real screwdriver, not the one that TCL provides. This set is very easy to set up, quickly programs the cable channels and off you go. And we just love the picture and sound - perfect fit for what we needed. And for $219 on Amazon - this 26" TV is a huge value! Highly recommended for this type of environment! And with a 2-year warranty, I feel pretty good about having this for awhile.

So let me just start off and say that I purchased the 32in version of this tcl TV. I noticed that they combine reviews for all three sizes of this version, so I just wanted to make it clear which one I am reviewing b/c I don't know if all the sizes have the same issue.

Lets start off at the beginning. Don't attempt for this to be a surprise for someone if you are not going to be there to sign for it. and you will have to sign for it even tho they never tell you. I know trust me this was suppose to be a surprise gift for my moms birthday, I even choose the gift options and everything. But it arrives in a brown TV box with plenty of writing on all sides, but only one big picture of an outline of a TV with (water? idk) on both of the main sides. they didn't even attempt to slap a sticker over them :/ She calls me at work (a week and a half before her birthday) and I'm like... Surprise!

This comes with the TV, the table stand, screws for the stand, manual, remote, and batteries for the remote. Simple enough... The TV itself, the front looks really nice really expensive, I love the fact that the speakers are on the front bottom. Trust me the gray/silver bar at the bottom that is the mesh over the speakers is in no way distracting from the picture you don't even notice it is there when you turn it on. The back seems a little cheep as well as the stem for the stand. Both made out of a hopefully not too cheep plastic. The thickness of the TV is about three inches? I didn't measure it but it was thicker than most of the display models I was looking at at the local brick and mortars. The base for the tabletop stand was my favorite. It is made of solid glass.... I have read some of the 42in TV reviews stating that it had a glass base but I wasn't sure if the smaller versions did. It makes the TV look and feel like I paid three times what I actually did.

Now comes the fun part! Assembly. Now I was originally going to give this TV a one star because of the assembly, but after a week and a half I changed my mind to four star because of the quality of the picture and sound not just based on assembly. But because of the following this TV will NEVER get a five star from me.

I may not be a mechanic or an engineer of any sort, but I do know how to use a screwdriver, it should have been fairly simple. Four screws, four holes, little to go wrong. Let me start by saying that you need to look at the picture VERY carefully, because if you put the base on backwards you are SOL. The side with the holes closer to the one side goes facing the back of the TV. Now the stem coming from the TV has four little plastic stems coming out of it these fit neatly into the four little indents in the glass base. Now comes the really fun part, screwing them in. I do NOT recommend an electric driver, these screws are so tight in the holes that I thought it would help opposed to the manual ones and all I accomplished was a chipped glass base.

Like I said, the screws where so tight, I had managed to strip the screws when they where all only half way in, if that. So there I was siting on my living room floor with four screws, part way in, but still out far past the little rubber feet on the base with stripped screws. So I couldn't even jerry rig it to stand up. In my house almost anything can be fixed with a pair of pliers and a can of WD40. :) Since I didn't think the WD40 would be of any help I grabbed the pliers. I'm just so glad that the screws had the extra little (I don't know what it is called permanently attached washer?) extra ring around the head that allowed me to get a good grip on it because other wise I would of been duck taping this sucker to my moms dresser. :)

After another fifteen minutes of careful tightening the screws, b/c every turn sounded like it was cracking the cheep plastic stem part. I managed to get all the screws flush against the base. After righting the TV I stood back and basked in a hour and a halfs worth of work. Only to be disappointed a minute latter, because no matter how tight it was the dumb thing still wobbled! Tired and frustrated, I thought, if it comes to it the duck tape is till on the table. Put a little dolly around it like a christmas tree and my mom will never notice :) But it never came to that, with three cats and a washer and dryer on the adjoining wall it barely moves. Wobbles a little with the spin cycle but no where near enough to knock it over.

Now the set up. Remote is cheep, very cheep, but was expecting that so not the biggest thing, we will be getting an universal remote soon anyway. The initial set up is fast and very simple. we just hooked it straight to our antenna, (we don't have cable) and scanned for channels. This TV does not need a converter box, it is all ready built in. It ended up finding almost double the amount then my moms old 19in that was hooked up to a converter box.

The picture is sharp and clear, we have yet to change any of the settings, even the volume! I hooked up a bluray player using one of the hdmi slots and it plays beautifully. I was worried because her room has two full walls of windows, that there would be a glare problem, but there is none. It doesn't matter if it is day or night, or if your directly in front or way off to the side from it, the screen is still perfectly clear. and with the speakers on the front the sound is crisp and clear. She says its like being in a movie theater it's so clear. The whole first week, she said she scared herself three times(that she will admit to) because she thought someone was siting in her room or that someone just walked in, b/c the screen was so clear.

So over all it is a wonderful TV for the price. You can't find a better one for such little money and trust me I researched A LOT! But if I were you I would look into a wall mount for it :) If I ever encounter any problems with it I will be sure to update this. Read more ›
