This review is more a testiment to Amazon then the Bulb. The bulb works which is all that I need, but the fact that I bought the light fixture and had to go to Amazon to get a replacement tells you something. They have everything you need and usually below any comptitive sites price, WITH shipping.

When our overhead bathroom fixture went dark after 6 years, at first we couldn't even figure out how to get into the fixture to replace the circular fluorescent tube inside. A trip to the hardware store to look at similar fixtures took care of that. Once we got the fixture apart and took the tube back to the hardware store, we learned that they didn't carry this particular tube. Tried two other big-box stores in town as well as smaller, local ones - nope. Amazon, of course, had it. The original clips had become brittle and one had broken so we ordered those as well; then, after reading a few reviews, decided we might as well replace the ballast, too, just in case. Everything arrived quickly and in perfect condition, and it was easy to install.I almost gave it only 4 stars, because our original bulb was 3500K but, in researching the differences in light "color" between the 3500K and this 2850K, I learned that the lower number is a bit "warmer" and the higher number "cooler" and "brighter white." This was the overhead light for a large bath area (tub, shower and dressing), and I thought "warmer" sounded good for that application. Well, now I really wish I'd replaced it with the same as original; the "warmer" light gives a yellowish tone to everything and, to me, looks dim and dingy. But that's not the fault of Amazon.com, the seller or the bulb itself; I made a choice and it turned out to be the wrong one.

A light is a light, more or less.
I have three ceiling lights in my kitchen. When one went out I headed out to my neighborhood Lowes with bad light in tow for recycling. They did not have these. So I went to Home Depot, nothing. Then to my local neighborhood hardware store - nothing. Needless to say - thank God for Amazon and my Prime membership free shipping!

This type of light seems to be in very short supply so after one supplier sent one that got lost in the mail and sent a second that was returned to them broken they were not able to supply. This vendor did not have that many but I was very happy to see it on the doorstep when I got home and have it work when I plugged it in. I just hope that when I have to replace it again I can still find it.

I was forced to order this online as my local hw store had something close, but not the right fit. As others say, you're forced to re-buy TCP's replacement bulb, ballast, etc. I recommend doing all 3 - bulb, ballast and clips. The cheap plastic piece attaching the ballast to the ceiling part broke off too easy. Also, the clips are too loose on my bulb...trying to use the old ones. But, the bulb fell out several times...again cheap plastic...manufacturers really need to go back to making quality products as this one is just simply cheap in all regards. I used the bulb in a bedroom for ~4 years, lots of off and on...there is no way the bulb saw "10,000 hours" as claimed on the "Lamp Life" label...must only be for consistent ON use. Here's the thing. My original light was more "white" in color output. The new replacement bulb - exact part number (I saved the original light bulb box) is more "yellow" in color output. Again cheap manufacturing...poor quality control. This is the KEY frustration of the product in my view. The seller was prompt in their delivery, so I have no complaints with them (wasn't shipped by Amazon).

The old one is still working and we've been in the house for 4 years. We use it in our kitchen and I'd have to say that's the light that is on the most in the whole house.

We bought two light fixtures that use these bulbs when we remodeled our house a few years ago. One of the bulbs recently burned out, we went to the local hardware store and found one that looks pretty much the same and is also a "T6" light but it did not fit in our fixture because of clearance issues. I was able to find the "correct" part on Amazon (much more expensive than that was at the store) but when it arrived it was a completely different color than the original lamp (new one is very yellow).
For the future we will be careful when buying light fixture to ONLY buy ones that use standard bulbs. |
