solid,

This is a good solid guide to TCP/IP, unlike many books which really only scratch the surface. By no means complete, but still very useful (and a good price)

Parts incomprehensible,

This review is from: TCP/IP Unleashed (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
While some of the content is okay, I often felt the information was incomplete. The chapter on LDAP is literally incomprehensible. After trying to read the LDAP chapter I completely gave up on the book and will try to find something better.

Great overview,

Non-technical look at TCP/IP that is great. I had a Windows and Linux network running in less thgan a day and I even know what's going on. Removed a lot of the technobable I see in other TCP/IP books. This book deserves a second edition.

My one stop shop for anything on TCP/IP,

This book covers the basics of TCP/IP as well as many related internet services, how they interact, and how to set them up on different operating system. I keep taking this of the shelf again and again more than a year after I bought it. A must have reference guide for anyone doing a little more TCP/IP than what comes on the ISP's setup disk.

This book is just short of the right thing.,

If networking is what you are looking to make a career out of, then you need to have a great understanding of TCP/IP and the entire protocol suite. You also need to have a reference manual that will provide this information to you.
This book is just short of the right book. One thing I found was some of the information was a little short of complete and a few typo errors in the book as well. I also found that the book states the level to be intermediate to advanced and I think it is more of the beginner to intermediate.
I found that the book does give a good overall explanation of TCP/IP and that there were some topics like firewalls that cover only about 9 pages and I think the information could have been expanded.
Overall the book does provide good information for the A+, Net+, CCNA and other first level exam certifications. I can also say that this book was great for a TCP/IP seminar I recently gave, but still some improvements are need to make this the go to manual.

This is a good book for newbies but for the technicly enclined individual that can already explain many of the TCP/IP fundimentals and related protocols. It's really kind of a published version of whatis.com or webopedia making it a good refrence manual, but if you already have a clue and are looking for technicly advanced material then invest the money on 1000 pages elsewhere such as certification orientaded books for network+, ccna, or ccnp.

LOTS, and I mean LOTS of mistakes,

This review is from: TCP/IP Unleashed (Unleashed) (Paperback)
I was hired to translate this book into Romanian, and I was amazed at the number of factual errors that slipped through its editing. Ultimately, my translation report contained about 25 pages of errors in the source book.
A hilarious example can be found at page 140. It says about the IP address space that "This makes for a total of 4,294,967,296 IPs. Not so many when you think about it. There are more than four times that many people in China alone" Heaven forbid China had 17 billion people. |
