The game is just OK. I played it with my ten, twelve, and fourteen year old kids and we got about an hour of frustrating "entertainment". The mix of letters doesn't lend well to making many words, especially after each person's first turn. There simply are not enough vowels on the dice. We played several rounds, and way too often we ended up with 7 or 8 consonants out of 9 dice, leaving only 1 or 2 vowels (to go with a Z, J, X, or whatever...).

Also, for some reason there is a die with just a "Q" and another one with "Qu". They don't always come up, but getting either in this game is a guaranteed lost round.

By contrast, we played Nab-it, another word game, and vowels are abundant and much less frustrating. We'll probably keep Nab-it and put this game in the garage sale box.

Campbell's Alphabet Dice Game

MFG: TDC Games
#of Players: 2 - 6
Age Range: 8+

Overall Construction: As you can tell from it's title this is a dice game so it's construction isn't very complicated. You get 36 dice with black & red letters on them. The container is clever, it looks like an oversized can of soup complete with serving size and instead of cooking instructions it has a quick start set of rules. The only thing that would have been better is if the container had been made of tin like an actual can of soup. There is also a set of rules in the can with detailed instructions & the backside has score sheets. I recommend copying the score sheet or using a separate piece of paper so you don't lose your rules.

Gameplay: Playing the game is pretty simple. You divide the dice evenly among the players. Have a dictionary handy because once the dice are given out everybody takes their dice and rolls them in front of themselves. At this point players start trying to build a crossword puzzle style formation until the first player runs out of dice. And for you cheaters out there you can only use the letters that are showing on the top. Each player on their turn gets to try to place a word using as many dice as possible, just like in scrabble. You even play your words off your opponent's words and in case you can't make a word there is a thing called "Slurping" where you can replace one letter of a word with one of your letters to make a different word. Be careful how you use your Slurp because you only get 1 per game. If you can't do either thing then you must pass to the next player. When everyone has hit a wall with their dice, meaning no one has a legal play you can do what they call "Re-heating" which is basically everyone re-rolls their remaining dice.

I bought this game for my college-age daughter, who is an education major. I thought the packaging was novel and fun. We played the game several times over Thanksgiving break. It is engaging, and it does make you think a little and plan your words and strategy. With more than three or four people, it can move slowly at times, as you're waiting for all the other people to take their turns. I'd recommend playing it with 2-4 people and set a time limit for each turn to keep it moving along. The cubes might also be used for kids to practice their spelling words. Have fun!

Fun and easy to play. We laughed a lot while creating words. I also liked the format because it made it easy.

My boys love to just sit and spell with the letter dice. They have the best time just making words. We haven't really played the actual game yet, but have spent plenty of time with this toy. It's great - makes learning fun.

I am a HOSTS mentor at a local school where we help second and third graders with their reading skills. When I saw this I knew it would be a great fit for the game time we have at each session. The games reinforce something we are working on with our kids. While I have not played it yet with one of my girls the HOSTS teacher reports it is great fun and the kids loved it. Educational does not have to mean boring and I think kids and adults will find this game a great way to spend quality time together.
