Close but not enough...,

I've been looking for a decent mp3 player at a decent price for a while and it seemed like this one fit my needs with a rebate. At the current price, I would've bought something else but it was about a half price so I think it was worth it. Anyway, here is the review...Pros Cons I would most likely recommend this unit if it has a rebate. If not, go with something else.

So far, I'm Impressed...,

Mojo originally caught my eye aesthetically (I'm a girl, what can I say?). After reading the reviews here and discovering a rebate, I decided to give it a try. Two big draws were the FM radio and expansion slot.I've had my unit for about a week and have used it everyday jogging. I'm very pleased so far!

It's USB 1.1, so loading songs is slow. There is a distinct sound quality difference between the radio and the MP3 player. The radio, being worse, is especially bad at capturing "highs". Since the EQ only works for the MP3 player, you can't tweak the radio sound. The tinny sounding TDK earbuds do actually make the radio sound OK. But do you really want to use your "good" headphones for the MP3 player and the TDK ones for the radio function? Also the FM tuner does not do well in pulling in stations in San Francisco (a tough environment). Otherwise it has reasonably good functionality. Good manual. Good software. Good user interface. Nice ergonomics.

Forget downloading from Napster,
This review is from: TDK FMP3-128FAX MOJO 128F MP3/WMA/FM Player (128 MB) (Electronics)
I was quite impressed with this unit (small, attractive, good sound) until my husband and I tried to download some tunes from several commercial sites. Between the proprietary software and Windows Media Player not recognizing the USB connection we had to call TDK tech support for help. During the call, TDK broke the news that you can't download music from the commercial sites because of their built in protections -- you can really only "rip" tunes off of CDs or download from "free" sites. Since the idea of downloading music (rather than buying CDs) was the primary reason I bought the Mojo for my husband, this was an unpleasant surprise. It would have been nice to know the Mojo wasn't compatible before I bought it.

The main part that I liked is to be able increase the memory by SD card and SD cards are cheap. So far I have 386 MB and works fine (The manual says upgradable to 256 MB).

great features, but not quite perfect,
This review is from: TDK FMP3-128FAX MOJO 128F MP3/WMA/FM Player (128 MB) (Electronics)
I got this player for a great deal a while back, but find that I haven't used it as much as I thought I would. I still have high hopes though. FM radio and voice radio are big pluses for long-term usage (iPods can't claim this I don't think), the battery life is pretty decent for only one AAA battery (better than the lithium-ion type to me since you can easily carry more), and it seems pretty durable since I've already dropped it a few times (yay for flash memory). However, I would've liked to see the following to make me want to use the device more:- USB plug built-in to the device instead of via a cable - more easily used around different machines and as external storage - manage music directly through Windows Explorer without additional software - the device is not recognized as a USB storage device and has to use accompanying software (if someone can figure out otherwise, let us know!) - more intuitive buttons - they're not bad but it seems you have to press a lot of buttons to do certain things (maybe I'm just not used to small sized devices with few buttons though). Oh, if you can't bear to be without your headphones, you'll find that 128 mb is not enough for listening to a lot of music. It's great that the device is expandable, but my cheap solution was to buy one of those mp3-CD players for when I can carry around more bulk (more often than not for a girl). I guess the next step up would be an iPod or other hard-drive based device, but for that extra price you can probably get a 1G SD/MMC card very soon. And no, I really don't think you need to carry around 30 Gigs of your music collection considering battery life for those devices is usually only 10 hours. Spend your money elsewhere, like buying this almost-perfect device.

The FM quality is good! It has a SD/MMC slot which is really nice since you can expand it from the limit of 128mb, the sd/mmc card is very popular and can be shared with a digital camera for example. It can also act as a flash drive, which is a bonus. The sound can be really loud without too much distortion. I don't have anything to complain.

I don't know why the first reviewer is complaining. This mp3 player is really really good. Has so many features that are easy to use. Headphones are ok, sound quality is really good in mp3 mode. Overall, this is a neat gadget. |
