4.0 out of 5 stars good tape deck, great price
I've never got around to installing a cd player in my truck, so I still record all of my cds on tape. When my tape deck recently broke, I was faced with a delimma. Buy a new tape deck, or install a cd player in my vehicle. Since I've made over 500 tape recordings of my cd's, I decided to stick with the tape deck. 2.0 out of 5 stars TEAC - a favourable price but at what cost?
At first blush, this unit looks promising (keeping in mind that one shouldn't expect miracles given the selling price, etc.). One of the cassette mechanisms on this particular TEAC W-600R developed a loud electronic hum (which had also translated to the Recording as well as the Playback mode) after only 3 weeks of extremely light use - a virtual out-of-box failure. The TEAC W600-R is a great componant for the price. The recordings come out clear, with very little hissing. The functions are icreadibly easy to operate. I haven't yet used the tape to tape dubbing, since most of my recording is done from cds. I would absolutely recommend this recorder. You can't beat the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real find!, December 9, 1999

This is a very simple to use dual deck that sounds great...I found the controls to require a feather touch. The solenoids controling the transport are loud. The transport itself is smooth and noise free. This is as good as it gets at twice the price.

I returned the item for a replacement (ever the Optimist or simply too stupid to know better) and am awaiting the new unit. I must add that, unfortunately, my experience with TEAC products has always been disappointing at best (at present, I have 3 TEAC products and all suffer from a malfunction of some sort on at least one of the features). I actually purchased this W-600R to "replace" (via AUX) the suddenly non-functioning cassete decks on my TEAC DC-D2831 Compact Hi-Fi System (rather than trash the whole System). Those just quit out-of-the-blue. These failures seem to happen too regularly to attribute to a series of coincidences. Just saying "beware", I suppose. Sometimes a bargain isn't always a bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent For The Money, May 29, 2007

This Teac is a suprisingly good deck for the price. It only has Dolby B noise reduction, but that is fine considering that there were (or almost were) no commercial tapes made in Dolby C or DBX anyways. Wow and flutter are not a problem. My only complaint is that you cannot rewind one deck while doing something totally independent on the other because of the single moter drive. I am also not wild about the door design (you push directly on the door to open or close it) but those are minor quips compared to how good it sounds for this price. This would make a great deck if you are transfering you old cassettes to digital.

This deck has better high frequency response than my old Teac V-66C(died from a loose belt). No Dolby C, but my old tapes sound fine with B. It does clunk when stopping or reversing but that is a nit. I am extremely happy to hear how good my old tapes sound!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked for only 2 weeks, December 13, 2007

This review is from: TEAC W-600R Dual Full-Logic Cassette (Electronics)
I went for the lowest cost machine, but that was a mistake I won't repeat. The TEAC W-600R worked great for two weeks (about the time it took me to dub 15 tapes to my PC). Then, the drive mechanisms in both bays stopped working and the machine began to produce loud clicking sounds. No amount of turning the machine off/on or hitting buttons worked to correct it. The unit is junk and is being returned.

This product lives up to its description. Exactly what I wanted but didn't think I could find anymore. I have a collection of Tapes that I want to convert to CDs but needed a quality playback tape deck that didn't cost too much. This is it. The functionality of the soft touch buttons is great. Great sound quality for a tape player.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good unit at a fair price but please be kind to it, July 4, 2007
This review is from: TEAC W-600R Dual Full-Logic Cassette (Electronics)
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey (That worked in several electronic stores), I am often asked to write and or discuss various audio products and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

TEAC W-600R Dual Full-Logic Cassette

The Teac unit gives you the ability to play on both portions of the deck and record on one. Although you may be tempted to use high speed dubbing, take the extra time and record in the normal mode. Very few decks (Especially in the price range of 100.00) were able to offer trouble free high-speed dubbing.

The old saying you get what you pay for is realistic. The construction is not made for heavy use on a daily basis and you need to operate the controls with care and not reckless abandon.

If you take it easy on the controls and use but don't abuse, for the price you will be satisfied.

As always try to use quality tapes such as Maxell or TDK for the cassette portion and please keep the tape heads clean or it circumvents the idea of a nice investment. Dirty heads will give the playback muddy results.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

I got this for my wife. She wanted a quality dual well cassette player/recorder. She isn't into the high tech stuff (me the more buttons the better). She learned to use this one in a few minutes and loved it so much she had me order a second one (from Amazon again) for when she wears out this one which she most certainly will. Thanks for a great product and price.
