I got these for about thirty dollars shipped from accessories4less dot com, over the advice of several people on several audio forums to get more expensive metal stands.

I use Mordaunt Short MS05 bookshelf speakers on these, and the stands work perfectly. I think that the only time you might want to spend 3-5 times as much for a super heavy metal stand is if you have very big speakers, no subwoofer, and listen to a lot of bass-intensive music. Otherwise these do the job nicely for smaller speakers with the lowest frequencies passed on to a powered subwoofer---it's the lowest frequencies which are most likely to cause resonance on cheaper MDF stands like these.

The effect of elevating my speakers just another 16" has been extraordinary...totally opens up the sound, I almost feel as if I'm listening to floorstanders! Before my speakers were about 15" off the ground on a long and low Ikea TV stand, now with these stands the tweeters are exactly at ear level when I'm sitting on my couch, and good God what a nice difference...worth every last penny.
