4.0 out of 5 stars Works well on Kindle Fire March 17, 2012

I'm very happy to have this app, especially with the option to download TED talks in high quality video for viewing when WiFi is not available. The quality of the streaming video in this app is also much better than watching it from the website through a browser. I haven't had any problems with the app on my Kindle Fire so far. The only downside is that the number of TED videos available for viewing is limited. For reference, the downloaded files are saved under Android/data/com.ted.android/files.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent app for the Fire (original model) November 5, 2012

This is a must-have app if you're a fan of TED talks. The video and audio are very clear and stream smoothly in HD. What I like the best is that the talks are organized and cross-referenced by topic and genre - I've been able to find several TED talks I've not seen before. Plus, when a talk is finished, it allows you to hit a button and be presented with a list of similar talks.

You can download talks to the Fire in either low or high res. That's a great feature for times when I won't have wifi access. The downloaded videos are available in the My Talks tab in the app. You can easily delete them (press and hold the video title and a menu comes up) if things get too cluttered. You can also bookmark talks for streaming later, with the bookmarks also appearing in the My Talks tab.

Other options include being able to listen to the talk using audio only, and show subtitles. The subtitles are very nicely done with clear typography.

I find the video quality, load speed and flexibility in selecting talks to be far better using this app than watching them through Netflix, and a bit better than using the TED website. Highly recommend!

This version of the TED app in question will only even OPEN on my 2012 Kindle Fire HD 7" approximately 20% of the time, and even when it does, there are issues with video playback, menu navigation, and other core features.

I checked everything I could think of that might be wrong... except one possible problem (one that plagues DOZENS, if not 100's or 1000's of apps on the Amazon Appstore).

The application version available here, at time of writing, is 1.1.4. Looking to Google's Play Store, the latest version available from TED is 2.2.3! Who knows how many bugfixes, performance improvements, and other overhauls have been made to the app in that version gap?

In all honesty, Amazon, I understand wanting to make your own fork of Android, and to curate your own appstore... it's an incredibly intelligent business decision.

But if your app offerings are so outdated (another culprit is ESPN SportsCenter; Amazon has v2.1.3, a version so far behind the Google Play offering, v4.0.3, that Amazon's app is still listed by the old name, ESPN ScoreCenter), bypassing your store and "sideloading" apps doesn't seem like just a smart decision from an average user's standpoint, but the more SECURE decision to make.

For all you experienced reviewers out there, go ahead and validate my claims. Compare versions of apps between Amazon's appstore and Google's. While they're good about some of them (Pandora comes to mind; both offerings are at v5.1.1), others are egregiously far behind, posing major potential security risks to anyone who downloads that app.

This is an issue requiring IMMEDIATE review, Amazon. Get on it.

Did not work well on the Fire. It froze numerous times while playing a video. The content on Ted is great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing March 15, 2012
Limited access to TED content. Better to use the actual web site to have access to all of the videos.
