Amazon offered these clamps as an add-on item for a few dollars, so I got two. I already have a stash of Jorgensen 4 1/2' micro clamps and Irwin 530062 micro bar clamps. All three are great clamps. What makes this TEKTON different is the unusual clamping mechanism. The "arm" moves rearward (i.e. toward the user) as it opens, which is exactly opposite the way the Irwin and Jorgensen work. Also, TEKTON uses a red thumb release vs. a finger release for the other two brands. I find the TEKTON configuration a bit goofy to use. I presume that they are trying to circumvent some patents. In any case, these clamps work fine for me, even though the design is unusual.

The TEKTON jaw pads are about the same size as the Irwins, and smaller than the Jorgensens. For what it's worth, I prefer the Irwin in terms of overall use, slightly ahead of the Jorgensens, but the Jorgensens offered a significant price advantage when I last purchased clamps. These TEKTONs work fine, too, but I find them awkward to use, because of their retro-dorsal design -I find myself tightening with my thumb rather than fingers. However, I have no problem recommending all 3 of them. They all work well, and the TEKTONs are the least expensive at least at Amazon's "add-on" price.

In my opinion as an avid DIY homeowner, this is a great clamp and a good value for the price. Anyone reading this review probably understands that you can never have too many tools. Clamps are one of those tools that I just never seem to have enough of. Sooner or later, I will be working on a project where I don't have enough clamps to do the job properly.

This is not a heavy-duty clamp, but it is as solidly constructed as you would expect for this price. It will provide many years of service in my shop. The clamp performs exactly as it should - it slides easily, clamps easily with one hand, and provides sufficient clamping force for most of my DIY project needs. Often I do not need a heavy-duty clamp or even want one. This clamp is lightweight and easy to use, and it is a great addition to my tool collection.

My primary concern before purchasing this product was that it might turn out to be flimsy garbage. Now that I have used it for several weeks, I can tell you that it is a solid product. If you are looking for an affordable, easy to use, light to medium-duty clamp to add to your collection, this Tekton clamp will fit the bill.

UPDATE 1/29/15: I still stand by everything in my original review, however I have two additions to make. First, I noticed that the price on this clamp varies quite considerably, and my recommendation only applies if the price is < ~$15. Above that, this Tekton clamp quickly loses its value proposition. Second, for those who are looking for a more heavy-duty clamp, take a look at the Jorgensen HD line. They are built like tanks and priced VERY reasonably. Overall I consider them to be a much better value, however sometimes you actually want a lighter clamp or you want the quick "pump and release" clamp style vs. the slower screw style.

I bought these to clamp a hickory side panel onto a newly installed cabinet while glue dried and they worked flawlessly. As the cabinet was already on the wall the ability to flip the jaws of one clamp and make it into a spreader ended up being a critical feature for me (see picture). The nylon pads on the jaws also work very well and maintain their position without marring the object being clamped.

Note that I also purchased Tekton's smaller "TEKTON 39180 6-Inch by 1.5-Inch Ratchet Bar Clamp" which is extremely weak by comparison (the clamping mechanism would start slipping after only a small amount of pressure was applied). With these larger 2.5" / 39181 clamps you can apply much more pressure and they still stay completely rigid and maintain a solid grip.

I would guess that the Irwin's clamps may last longer based on my previous experience with their tools, however, as these are half the price but still seem to be high quality I would recommend you give Tekton a try.

We needed some inexpensive mini-clamps for hobby work. Because this is for very occasional use, didn't really want to spend a lot of money to buy four clamps that would mostly sit around unused. These are price-wise what we're looking for, but be warned they are VERY cheaply constructed. A couple of screw parts fell off as we lifted them out of the shipping box! (Fortunately we didn't lose them and screwed them back on.)

You get what you pay for...sometimes you settle for the cheapest route when it's not "mission critical."

I have been using the clamps for 8 months to hold drawer and cabinet glue outs. They are not of good quality. The mechanism inside which leverages the hands squeeze and pushes the lower jaw upwards hinges on plastic components, not metal. One clamp broke in multiple peaces while using it. A quick glace showed only plastic components on the floor. The other 3 have the side screws lose, and there is no way to tight them ( they hold the opposite side of the bezel ), it appears they were put together by someone or some machine that over-tighten them and destroyed the plastic threads. So it is a question of time before they break.

If you want to save money on clamps, don't get these ones, it costs more in the long run.
