The magnifying glass is pretty good and the clamps hold your projects pretty well. Though there are some minor issues to bring up. The screws were tightened a little too tightly, you may have to use pliers to adjust them. The alligator clips (as all alligator clips come with this problem) tend to leave teeth marks on your projects, so don't leave them on for too long unless you don't mind having the bite marks on your PCB or wires. And lastly the base is very small, so using it on lightweight or small projects is best. It doesn't make all soldering jobs easier, but it does have its niche and it does it well.

Can't do much better for $4.,

It's not machined perfectly, but as far as I can tell, the flaws are only cosmetic. It functions as well as similar products that cost three times the price. The base is heavy enough to keep it from tipping over, the clips hold securely, and all the mechanical parts operate as they should. For the $4 price, you can't buy a better product. One note, while it says "Michigan Industrial Tools", it is, in fact, manufactured in China.

Decent third hand,

The base could be a little larger as it is prone to tip over but other than that this is a good helping hand. I would recommend drilling holes in the base to mount it on a solid surface or using a small vise with it.

I wish they made these without the (in my opinion) useless magnifier. Just like my previous set of helping hands, the first thing I did was remove the magnifying glass entirely. In its place, I moved one of the hands into that position. For me, they work better with the arms closer together. I also added some non-slip material to the underside of the base. The base is weighted, but not heavy enough, so without the non-slip material, it has a tendency to slide around.

base could be heavier and the locking wing nuts and bolts your going to have to get 2 pairs of pliers to tighten them down enough so that they dont move but the plus side is that once you do that you don't have to move them again usually

AS others have said - base is a little small and can turn over easily, Knowing that and still bought two! The price was hard to beat.First thing I did was sand the base down a bit to create a flatter surface. I then drilled two holes through base and got a scrap piece of wood and screwed the metal base to the wood. Now I have a very stable base. Many times I have soldered wires and used everything from vice grips to heavy books to hold the wires in the right place - this ought to solve all those problems. |
