This thing is simply useless, unless, of course, you need it to stir water in a small saucepan.
Any liquid thicker than water causes the Robostir to stay in place and rotate very slowly. It helps a bit if you place it touching the side of the pan, but it quickly starts rotating in place again.
Nothing at all like the ad shows.
The legs of this thing are not even three inches long, that means that you can't use it in a pot with more than 3 inches of liquid. It does not work for sauces, stews or gravies; it barely rotates in plain water.
It uses 4 AA batteries.

This RoboStir works much better than expected when used in a smaller sized sauce pan. We were given one of these as a gift by a person that has one and loves it, but we were somewhat skeptical about how well this would work. After putting through its paces making the smoothest "hollandaise" in a 6" sauce pan we are very pleased with the gadget.
This has a dishwasher safe detachable bottom with silicon "feet" to keep the pan bottom from getting scratched. The top takes 4AA batteries, not included.
It's not for every stirring job, but it does work well in deeper pans on "thinner" sauces.

I received the Robostir for Christmas and have used it on two occasions so far. The first time was on a recipe that required dissolving a couple tablespoons of sugar into a cup and a half of milk over low heat and stirring constantly. It worked great for this task.
The second time I used it was while making toffee. In an 8-inch heavy-bottom sauce pan, I used my regular wire whisk to manually stir the butter and sugar until the sugar was nearly all dissolved then set the Robostir into the pan and turned it to the highest stir setting. I wasn't sure how it would do stirring something a that would only get thicker and thicker, so I stood by and watched to make sure the butter didn't burn. I let it stir for about 15-20 minutes until the mixture started becoming more brown and getting too thick for it to stir really well. It was probably near soft-crack stage at this point. I set Robostir aside and resumed using the wire whisk manually for the final minutes needed to reach hard-crack stage. I was very pleased with how Robostir performed. Even though it's not meant for vigorous stirring, it is a great little tool to help remove some of the tediousness from toffee making. I'll definitely be using it the next time I make toffee.
