TERRO Outdoor Ant Killer - T901-6

Keep ants and other unwanted insects out of your house with TERRO Outdoor Ant Killer with Multi-Purpose Insect Control. Use this product as a perimeter treatment around the foundation of your house to keep ants, cockroaches, fleas and other insects from entering your home. The powerful ant killer granules kill pests on contact and provide long-lasting residual repellency. TERRO Outdoor Ant Killer is packaged in a convenient, re-sealable Shaker Bag which allows the granules to be easily distributed around the perimeter of your house, without handling the product. Just open the top, grab the handle at the bottom of the bag, and start spreading the ant killer granules. No chemical spreader or broadcaster is needed. This product is ideal as part of a two-step ant control process. Use TERRO Outdoor Ant Killer in conjunction with TERRO Liquid Ant Baits indoors to eliminate ants inside and prevent outdoor ants from re-infesting.

Treating Your Home with Ant Killer - Treating Foundations

Keep ants, cockroaches, fleas, waterbugs, milipedes, mites, silverfish, sowbugs, crickets and earwigs out of your house by applying a three to 10 foot band of granules near the house foundation. Water lightly immediately after application. It is best to treat the foundation when insects first appear or when you notice lawn damage. For best results, leaf litter should be removed from the foundation area and vegetation that touch the foundation should be cut back.

Treating Your Home with Ant Killer - Treating Ant Hills and Fire Ant Mounds

To control ants (except fire ants), apply one to two teaspoons over and around ant hills; water lightly immediately following application. If the soil is dry, water lightly before application to bring the ants closer to the surface for better control. For difficult ant infestations, use both a broadcast and spot treatment. To control fire ants, apply ½ cup of ant killer granules over and around each fire ant mound. Immediately following application, water the product in completely, applying a minimum of one gallon of water to each mound area. To prevent the disturbance of the fire ants, water gently – use of a high pressure hose may disturb the ants and cause migration, reducing the product’s effectiveness. For best results, apply in cool weather between 65 and 80, or in early morning or late evening hours.

Anybody attempting to do their own exterminating with only one product is like a plumber trying to do his job with only one tool: a screwdriver.

There are at least a dozen different types of ants in most regions and some require different types of treatments. There are sugar ants and protein ants each requires a different bait. Many ants march in trails 50 to 60 feet from their mound or bed.

One year, I sprayed ant trails all summer long and couldn't find the bed. That fall, I moved a whiskey barrel planter located 60 feet from the house and discovered a huge bed underneath.

I've been doing my own exterminating for 30 years. It took me 10 years to get it right.

Professional exterminators will tell you that DIY methods are ineffective. That's not true. It can be done. Granted, licensed exterminators have access to certain chemicals that homeowners do not. Even so, it is possible with the available chemicals if applied correctly.

The most common way to see an ant die immediately is to stomp it or spray it with poison. While you are stomping or searching for a can of spray, the queen has laid a dozen more eggs.

We live on a heavily-wood hilltop in the middle of 10 acres surrounded by pastures where fire ants and many other kinds of ants thrive. There are many kinds of invading ants and they have different diets, characteristics and preferred environments.

Save yourself a bundle of money. Over the past 30 years, I've saved $21,000.00 based on a savings of $700.00 a year less than the professional companies charge my friends and relatives for a termite contract.

In the foundation holes of my house, I use plain boric acid powder available at most dollar stores. The 2-pound squeeze bottle is what I use.

I have been using TERRO in the 3lb shaker bag since 2005. I apply it once per year, in late spring, just as temperatures are about to warm up. In eight years of use, I have had only two intrusive crawlers in my house. One was a beetle that may have attached to clothing and rode in and one was a cricket that was near death when it was seen. That is fantastic since I do not use any indoor treatments and I live in a rural environment. While there are fire ant mounds in the yard away from my home, I have never seen one close to the house or the carport. I spread two bags around the perimeter of the home, making sure to get it in behind any plants (have hedges across the frontage). I learned long ago that total eradication of fire ants would cost thousands of dollars and still may not be possible. I decided then to stop trying to kill every ant and just take a defensive posture and block their movement into my home. This strategy has proven successful.

I have taken product out to fire any mounds and dropped some around the hill. In a few days, the hill appeared abandoned. It doesn't take long for a new queen to bring her horde of workers in and set up a new colony.

Bottom line is TERRO products are safe when used properly and very effective. In fact, it is impossible for ants to consume this product and not die.

Let me first comments on the brilliant design of the package, for spot treating, i.e. in "flower beds" of shrubs, flowers, etc around house foundations, this is the product design one needs to get insect poison to those difficult places where a rotary spreader or even hand spreader will not work well. This product basically works like a huge salt shaker, and the granules are so light that the package can be handled with ease.
Now to the carpenter ants: we had been having a problem with a lot of carpenter ants coming inside our house, from the trees in the yard, they come in not via the tree branches but from the ground. I used this Terro shaker bag of ant killer, along the two sides of our house where the ants are known to have entered and both are "flower beds" full of shrubs and an AC unit. Watered in the granules per the instructions, after a week, zero ants. Matter of fact we saw only one ant inside after the granules were put out and that is amazing as we were finding upwards of 6 or more per day earlier. I recommend this product for carpenter ants.

Keyword: HAD. We had two massive ant colonies in our backyard to the point where the ground was spongy. We constantly had ants coming into the house. We had the interior liquid traps for a long time but there were just too many to cut it. We got this, shoveled loose the tops of the colonies and sprinkled the heck out of the colonies. Within a day or two we noticed that we hadn't seen a single ant in the house (at least not like we used to or where we used to). This was 2-3 months ago and we're still ant free! Love it!

There were several ant hills along my driveway and sidewalk. The shaker bag is perfect because you don't have to do anything but open the bag and shake it over the ant hill. It's super easy. The ants and ant hill were dead within a few days.

This did little to slow the ant population.
I feel doubly bad because I try to use as few pest products as possible, but am experiencing a LOT of them this year, from crawlies like ants to fungus on my grapes and apples.
Using this was a last resort, but even so it made little difference. Sprinkled and watered, as directed, but not very effective, at least on my strain of ants.
