Book Description

May 17, 1988 0874745497 978-0874745498 Updated
"If you really wish to learn" wrote Wilbur Wright, "you must mount a machine and become acquainted with its tricks by actual trial". And even before the Wright Flyer took off on its history-making first flight, intrepid researchers had been testing many different flying machines: the hapless tower jumpers of the Dark Ages; the balloonist of the eighteenth century; the glider builders of the nineteenth. In Test Pilots, Richard P. Hallion chronicles the history of test pilots from these early explorers to today's military men.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Test Pilots is an accurate, insightful, broad survey of flight testing from medieval tower jumpers to astronauts that focuses on the test pilot as vital link between designers, the hardware they produce, and a flying public. . . . As a survey of a largely unexplored subject, [the book] is a decidedly successful contribution to the burgeoning field of aerospace history. (Isis )

As a concise history, [Test Pilots] is first rate. . . . The story is detailed enough for technical readers and historians, but it moves quickly. . . . (Air Force )

This well-crafted, thoroughly researched work conveys a sense of the excitement, danger, and technical accomplishment felt by aircraft test pilots from Daedalus to Icarus to the Wright brothers and today's astronauts. (Sea Power )

Like The Right Stuff, Test Pilots belongs on every pilot's bookshelfffff (Steven L. Thompson Aircraft Owners And Pilots Association Magazine )

4.0 out of 5 stars A great aviation history book!, March 4, 2001

This review is from: TEST PILOTS : The Frontiersmen of Flight (Paperback)
Richard P. Hallion describes here the saga of aviation and flight test from the "tower jumpers", as monk Eilmer adventure (year 1.000) to Challenger and Voyager. The foreword from astronaut Michael Collins is great!
